Default ONE WAY BEARING FAILURES

Does anyone have any idea about what to do about one way bearing failures on the Gaui Hurricane 425? The original one shipped in the kit failed ASAP. Tne new replacement lasted for about a 20-30 second spinup to about 1/2 throttle?

I had some failures with some of the earlier bearings, but the more recent ones are reported to include the vxb bearings in them as stock. it is also important to make sure the bearing is free on the shaft. it should have a little bit of up/down play (~1mm or so) on the shaft, you should be able to flick it with your finger and have it coast on the shaft. On the plastic frame I only use one washer at the bottom of the bearing by the lower bearing block. hope that helps.

Another thing to watch out for with the plastic frame is to make sure you don't over tighten the frame bolts around the OWB shaft support bearings.

^^yup, they will eventually seize, then the shaft will heat and melt the plastic in the owb.

Hey guys,

I'm experiencing the same issues with the Gaui-stock-OBW, so I'd like to give the VBX-replacement a try. Can anyone of you explain to me how to get off the pinion from the old OBW? And how do you make sure that it doesn't come loose from the VBX-piece part later on?

Thanks for your answers,

David

If you have a vise you can press the old one out and the new one in with a couple of sockets. If you don't have a vise a C-clamp will also do the job. I used a little green loctite on the outside of the OWB before I pressed it in.

I used two different size 1/4" drive sockets and a vise to remove it. I used a small amount of blue locktite on the ouside of the VXB bearing before pressing the new one into the gear. I leat mine cure overnight, So far so good. probably 6-7 trouble free flights with the new bearing. The original failed in about 2-3 fights Some say that the new kits have the VXB bearing, mine did not.

So, let's say you have a brand new gaui owb
and you put it on a shaft and flick it
it does not spin, it does turn, but no coast
and its not the old plastic fingers owb, it is brown inside
and you can see metal fingers next to the bearings

And the shaft is not even mounted, its in my hand

So what are the chances that the 3 owb I had for backup
were bad? ,bought in january

My helis is like a ex wife now, the sight of her disgusts me
and I haven't touched her in a while, and well I better not go that far
lol, I just remembered this joke about" hurricanes"

What do hurricanes and x-wives have in common?
there wet and wild when they first come by,
when they leave they take your house and your car

I am kinda surprised to hear of all the owb failures. I have a Hurri 550 that I built 3 years ago, and an original 425 kit purchased at IRCHA in 2009 and each of them still have the original 20T owb in them that I installed. Never had a problem yet.

Gaui's OWB system was defective from the beginning. It runs 2-3x the speed of any other 425 and up heli (3x the headspeed)...somehow I doubt the needle rollers are meant for up to 9000 rpm. Then it can run against the two bearings above or below it when it is freewheeling which causes heating...although, the standard trex design does this to an extent as well. Those two things aren't good for lesser quality one way bearings but the worst part of the design is the really skinny bearings that fall apart after small number of flights. The Big Balls bearing blocks do help with the second and thirds issues and makes motor mesh adjustment a whole lot easier. Let's not get started on the possible cracking between the teeth of the OWB because there isn't much metal...

I must be a bit of a masochist to have known all this and built up a 425 to go with my 550 (or maybe it's like stockholm syndrome)

As for the bad bearings straight out of the box, perhaps there may be production problems with getting a bit of the green loctite into the bearing?

I got one lift off on my new 425 built as a 500. Build thread is in the 550 section. I landed to adjust blade tracking, then on the next lift off I heard a pop and before I could spool down the bearing grabbed and folded the blades back damaging the roots. I took the owb assembly out, cleaned and inspected it and put it back together to try again. Now it doesn't clutch at all. I've ordered the VBX to rplace it. What is everyone doing for lube in these bearings? The manual doesn't address it as far as I can see.

My 425 couldn't get off the ground because the OWB let go, as well. This is my first Gaui and I'm not very impressed.

I also don't like seeing comments here about loosening frame screws. All starts to point to some pretty poor quality and poor tolerances.

VXB wants $10 to shipping one bearing overseas and $5.95 for the bearing. I see there are plenty on eBay quoting ABEC 3 or better and they only want $6.94 shipped for the HF0812 bearing (USA seller). VXB doesn't specify a tolerance. Is ABEC 3 good enough for the 425?

For people looking for the VXB HF0812 OWB, outside of the USA, you can find them on eBay from seller irvineman:
http://cgi.ebay.com/HF0812-One-Way-N...item53dcf629c1

$6.95 + $1.72 international shipping

I've ordered the one stating ABEC 3 or better, as well. It will be interesting to see which one fits the gear the best.
