Yo! (New Member intro + battery question)
Hello!,
I'm new to the hobby and have been lurking here for a couple months and thought I'd introduce myself to the community. I asked a question this past weekend that got several prompt responses (thanks for that); It seems like a great place for newcomers to learn. My parents got me a toy coaxial this past Christmas and I was hooked! I got bored with it after a couple weeks and the next step was an RTF Mcpx and phoenix. After I could fly fast forward, figure 8's, and nose-in without crashing I went and got a RTF 4503D. And then the trouble started. "Ready to Fly" was the grossest misnomer I've ever encountered. I took her up on the first pack and it was like trying to ride a wild horse. It vibrated and wobbled and spun and wanted to run off in different directions all at once. Out of the box the mainshaft was bent, the one-way bearing didn't spin perpendicular to the shaft, the flybar was unequally seated, and the center of gravity was somewhere under the rear stabilizer . So I watched about 2 dozen hours of helicopter setup procedures on youtube and got free replacement parts from HH. Ive had this thing for about a month and have torn it completely apart and flown maybe 6 packs on it trying to fix everything. She still likes to drift a bit (think i need further ball link adjustments) but I can finally fly around without worrying the helicopter is going to fly itself straight into the ground without any provocation. Talk about a rush! I'm going to be addicted to these for the rest of my life. I haven't had a 450 crash yet... but learning inverted is pretty tempting and I'm guessing my first crash will shortly follow my first inverted hover attempt... This site was a huge factor in me not getting frustrated and giving up and made learning all the new terms and concepts fun instead of a daunting chore. (A few months ago I had never even heard of terms like "swashplate" and "Feathering Spindle") So that leads me to my question. Over the past few weeks I've been learning as much as possible about electronics theory and have a charger + power supply picked out that will last me up to a 600 sized heli. ...but I cant quite convince the wife to let me get it for the next couple months. I ordered some 2200 Turnigy's along with an xt-60 > EC3 adapter cable (Eventually I'll re-solder Deans) that I'd really like to fly. Would it damage the turnigy lipos if I charged them a few cycles on the stock e-flite charger that came with the 450 ? I don't mind waiting if it will do irreparable damage to the batteries....but man it would be nice to be able to fly for more than 6 minutes in an hour Hmm, so that was a bit longer than I originally planned, but if you're still reading, thanks for all you contributing founts of knowledge, I'll be hangin out here for awhile. The stock charger will handle the HK Lipo's with no problem. It's max charge rate is 1.8 amps so it will be fine. The HK web link states those batts are 5C charge rate, so you could "theoretically" charge them at 11 amps, although I would never charge a Lipo at that high a rate.

I wonder if the Blade 450 you got was used before you got it and someone returned it after crashing it? I can't imagine a brand new never flown helicopter having a bent main shaft?
As long as the stock charger doesn't overcharge the batteries there is no real harm of it damaging the packs. After it is done charging check the voltage of the pack with a voltmeter. It should read 12.6V or just a little bit less. If it is over 12.6V stop using the charger! I'm sure it will be just fine though.

Welcome! I only beat you here by a month or so LOL and am also an addict as well. I was in the same battery charger dilema as you, and I decided on the i3010b and itvis awesome!. I did not buy a power supply, I just use a small 12volt battery and a battery charger for the time being and I have no prob charging 3 packs in about 45mins really nice to not have to wait to fly!

I'll oversimplify, so guys don't beat me up to badly.
I think of chargers as basically coming in 3 favors. -slow -medium -fast. The speed of charging is for the most part dictated by how much output wattage the charger is capable of, assuming you have a power supply that meets the chargers needs. Slow chargers: like that which comes with the B450, someone mentioned charges at 1.8amps max. x 12.6v. I'm guessing its a 25amp charger. You should only be discharging the battery to about 80% of its rated capacity, so putting back around 1600mah for a 2200mah battery. I would expect that charger to be able to charge it in maybe 30 to 45 minutes. (thanks for correction FutanaS). Medium chargers: There are a whole slew of 50watt chargers out there. These chargers usually max out at 5amps charge rate. With the right parallel cable setup, you should be able to charge 2 of the B450 batteries in about 30 minutes. If doing parallel charging, I charge at 4.4amps (1C). yes, I know I could charge faster, but im conservative. I have a really inexpensive imax b6 charger of this type.. works just fine. You can use a laptop (thinkpad) brick as a power supply for this. Fast chargers: And then there are those that can do 200, 300, 500 and I think even more. These chargers are an absolute necessity when you get to the big helis and their 6cell batteries otherwise you'd be waiting forever for them to charge. I just purchased a 200watt charger not long ago. It's max charge rate is 10amps. I then got the parallel charge and balance cables. Now I can easily charge all 4 of my Blade 450 packs in about 30 minutes and still have capacity to spare. I don't really plan on owning a heli larger than then 450, so I think the 200watt will serve me well long into the future. Thanks FutannaS. Your correct. I'll try to edit my above post.. (I'm not sure why I was thinking 50%).. It's common for me to have to put 1600mah back in.. which is much closer to the 80% than 50%..
