Kontronik Koby 55 died on maiden flight

Just a rant... I was spooling up my new Warp 360 for the first time. The heli didn't even leave the ground, the motor quit and a smoke puffed out from the heli.



Fortunetely no other parts got damaged, just a satellite cable got charred. Tonight I redid the cable layout and installed a Hobbywing 40A ESC taken from my Tarot 450.

I'm wondering whether the hassle of sending the ESC to Germany for servicing/replacement will pay, as both German and Brazilian customs services are quite picky, not to say the long turnaround time between sending the ESC and getting it back.

I'm thinking I'd better to junk it...

did you figure out why it burned up? bad motor or is the burn on the BEC cable from it shorting out on the frame?

What motor. There is one Scorpion motor in particular that is not compatible with the Koby. The EXACT same thing happened to a friend at the local field with his Warp... the result was both the Koby and motor were friend. Both were replaced without cost (in his case). He now uses a different combo.

Scorpion HK-2520-1360KV. It did not get damaged, fortunately.

Yesterday I did several flights with the Hobbywing ESC (in fact, a Turnigy K-Force, same stuff really) and the heli performed GREAT! What a nice setup!

I chilled out and "kontacted" Kontronik to see whether I can get a replacement under warranty. Who knows I'll get a new one... As this ESC is not "kompatible" with my "Skorpion" motor, I think I will put it for sale!

It was tied along the ESC's body.

Exactly the same as mine. I emailed Kontronik, they said that their warranty is normally void for second-hand units, but as this is a notorious problem, they will send me a brand new ESC anyway. Thanks Kontronik!

Update: I just received a free brand new Koby 55 from Kontronik. And I wasn't even the first owner, but as this was a severe bug, they decided to replace my failed ESC anyway. Now this is a great customer service!
