Buying a second heli for spares
Just wondering whether there's merit in buying an entire second heli (in this case a HK600GT) minus electronics for spares in addition to the parts I think I might need?
The basis being there will likely be something I never thought of. Cheers, Mike |

It does come in handy! Not sure if it's proven to save money, but it saves time because you have at least one extra of everything on hand.
I have two of each: Blade mSR, Eflite Extra 300, Belt CP I didn't go out and just buy two right from the start though. I kept my eyes open on the 'for sales' and in the hobby shops, and when I saw a good deal on a 'used', 'broken', 'for parts', etc. I went and got the second. As you said, sometimes you break, lose, strip, etc. something completely unexpected, like some little washer or a screw.

I did it out of necessity . My first crash would ahve cost me more in parts than just buying a kit without electronics.

Thanks - not sure if HK will put the bird on sale as such (not that pricey to commence with) so I might just drop the hammer now.

Follow up question - the HK600GT is obviously a cheap alternative to a TREX 600E. There are parts that are not built with the same degree of precision.
Is there any point upgrading any of the HK parts to those of the TREX, or just buying another HK600? That is to say, would I just be throwing away money putting good parts in there and just learnt to fly this one as it is (or similar parts) and then down the track once ready to get more serious buy a completely new bird? I started looking at TREX parts and before I knew it had $300+ worth of parts in the cart when I could have two complete HK replacements for the same price. Edit: Have stumbled across some other HK dedicated posts now that have given me a clearer idea. Last edited by michaelv976; 11-10-2012 at 11:02 AM.. |

I'd get a second flying heli. That way if you crash one you always have something to fly while you're waiting for bits.
In my numerous crashes I have always bent or broken just about the same things, flybar and main rotors. With the exception of the Trex 500 where I also popped all three cyclic servos and needed gear trains for each (about £4 and half an hour fiddling with each one). With the second one I set it up to be slightly more aggressive in terms of rates, expo, pitch curves, throttle curves. I picked whichever one I wanted depending what mood I was in, however my fingers and head quickly got used to the new higher rates and I soon found the tamer one too tame, and bazzed those up a bit as well. 'Twas a good way of moving my flying forward. |
