Maybe those of us that paid early didn't require any comms, we'll just get a tracking email when the second batch ship. The service I've received from Esprit so far has been very good.

Maybe. This forum is too much of a tease to follow until I know my stuff is at least on the same continent. Too confusing to waste brain cells on until then.

All the aluminum shavings are sent back to the foundry for recycling so its not much waste

Also, Aluminium is the most abundant metal and third most abundant element on earth.

It is also one of the most expensive (in terms of energy input) metals to refine, wasting it is a bad idea. Though if their scavenging equipment is good then you dont waste much. Pretty expensive in wear on tooling though (have to cut away all that metal).

If they were after strength a forged AL plate would be stronger, and using several pieces (front plate and 4 interlocking side plates would be almost as strong and waste far less material. Apple do the same thing, it seems more marketing driven than anything else, apparently CNC = good in the mind of buyers.

I only use matchsticks made for non-renewable rain forests to light my Alu furnace.

Forged AL is still pretty "raw" stuff... it would still require CNC milling to get it within (for me) acceptable tolerances and then there are extra steps required to assemble the pieces. The extra screws required to hold the pieces together would probably eat up any cost savings.

Compared to wood, the total environmental impact of using AL is of course catastrophic but if you look at the total environmental impact compared to plastic then its actually not that bad... and AL "decomposes" in decades, not centuries.

Cool, thanks. I wasn't trying to bash them, I was just wondering why they used a solid block instead of making the cases like other radios. More strength sounds pretty cool to me.

I received a shipping notice this afternoon from Esprit Models. I placed my order around mid December. Hopefully that gives you guys some sort of time frame based on your time of order. Esprit claims they are going to receive 50% of the production line so that should knock out a few backorders in the next round.
