What mAh battery's
I am building 600 class heli and would like to know what is the trend now for battery mAh in a 10s setup. Is it still 3300-3700 mAh or 4000-5000 mAh. Thanks for your replys.

I am using 3 different types of packs currently and trying to decide which I like best for my 10S setup...
3300 30C 3600 30C and 4000 30C So far the 3600 30C packs are delivering the best balance and performance as far as bang for the buck... the 4000s are a tad on the nose heavy side, but fly well and give me nearly 8 minutes of mild 3D flight.. I am using the Scorpion 4025-630 on 17 tooth, with the 110HV controller, and taking out around 420-440mAh per minute... Hope this helps.. |

How can a 12s system with 2 6s 3000 to 3600 mAh batteries fly longer that a 6s 5000 mah set up ? Seems that 5000 mAh batteries should fly longer. More capacity. Ken

It is stored energy or watt-hours (Wh). A 6S 5000mAh pack is 6*3.8V*5Ah=22.8V*5Ah=114Wh A 12S 3000mAh pack is 12*3.8V*3Ah=45.6V*3Ah=136.8Wh Let's assume we fly the same heli equally on 12S and 6S. It can never be equal as different voltage systems are never identical but let's idealize a bit. If a 6S uses an average of 30A, the equivalent (ideally) setup on 12S will use only 15A - double the voltage and you'll need half the current to produce the same output. So for the 6S setup we will have (and use) average power of 6*3.8V*30A=22.8V*30A=684W. The 12S setup will have (and use) 12*3.8V*15A=45.6V*15A=684W - as you see the same power (again, ideally). The 6S setup will use all of the stored energy in the 6S 5000mAh pack of 114Wh in 114Wh/684W=0.1(7) hours or 10 minutes. The 12S setup will use all of the stored energy in the 12S 3000mAh pack of 136.8Wh in 136.8Wh/684W=0.2 hours or 12 minutes. Now, if we used 2x 6S 2500mAh in series for the 12S setup, then the flight time (ideally) would be the same 10 minutes as with the 6S 5000mAh as they have the same stored energy (Wh). |

Hi Ivan That was a very good explanation. I have a Raptor 50E and I was using a 10s LiFe packs 2300 mAh. I would only get 4 to 4.5 min. flight time. I switched to 2 - 4s LiPo 5000 mAh packs and I get 6 min. on the the first few test flights. I can fly them longer but was breaking them in. I am building 2- T Rex 600s CF, one with a Neu 1515 2.5 motor and one with a Align BL600M motor. I already have the Phoenix Ice 100 ESCs and motors and 7- 6s 5000 mAh batteries. So I guess I will have to wait until I wear them out or sell them at a later date befor I can go 12s. I like to read about the different power systems. Thanks Ken

I am wanting to get more informed about the parameters of my heli's performance, so I want to get some kind of a data acquisition system for it.
From reading here, it seems that some ESC's collect a lot of data, and it seems that one could also spend some $$ on a stand-alone data-logger. How about some discussion about the various data-logging resources and the value of the various data points...... I need some help deciding what system to get........ Also: Is it worth the effort to change to a different system voltage from 6S for learning to fly basic manouvers and light aerobatics (no 3D)? Last edited by nairbg; 12-15-2010 at 11:43 AM.. |

I do basic flight and light aerobatics such as flips, rolls, short inverted attempts and fast forward flight and I can't imagine going more than 6S... its simply just not needed from what I see.
Also there are plenty of people with a 6S set-up on their 600's ThunderPower 45C's that do very intense 3D where I am located with a 5 minute flight and everything seems to be just fine and they have plenty of power even in a stock elelctronic 600 ESP. I'm sure there are options but why waste the money if its not needed

Have you compared the temperatures of the motor, esc and packs between both setups? Have you compared the life cycles of the packs between both setups? You may find this thread an informative read - How to - 12s T-Rex 600 Setup On A Budget.

I'm sure the 12S is incredible, I will post a vid of a 600 ESP on stock everything except Edge Main & tail blades on a 6S pack. Very impressive and hard 3D

Hi guys,
I have a 12s system. I use two 3000mah, 40c turnigy batteries. My charger is a powerlab8. That is what makes this work. I can perfectly parallel charge 6 batteries from 3.8volts per cell in about 12 'minutes. I get 5 minutes pretty hard 3d flying time. The esc, batteries and motor come down almost cold. The only thing that gets hot is the servos. -greg Quote:
