Why lipo for 18MZ?
Couldn't Futaba have given longer "up-time" [than the 14MZ] with D-sized NiMH cells? Sure, the TX might be heavier/bulkier, but aren't lipos like --- extremely volatile?

Lipos are not a safety issue in these kinds of devices. The transmitter has internal safety circuits that make them very safe. Cell phones, tablets, and loads of laptops all have lipos in them and have proven to be very reliable.
Lipos got a bad reputation early on due to poor handling practices, charging mishaps, etc. Honestly, I would not give it a second thought. Lipos are far superior to NiMH cells in so many ways that they are an easy choice for the TX power. BTW - I get 7-1/2 hours of flying time on a charge with stopping point of 30% remaining capacity.

Lipos arn't extremely volatile if treated with respect. The 18mz has all the balance/ low voltage circuittry internal. It will not let you overdischarge the battery as the software will shut the radio down way before the critical point.
I've only charged mine twice to full and the system timer is reading 13 1/2 hours. The first charge went down to 35% and atm it is reading 98% from the last charge

I recommend that you only charge it as Futaba intended. If you remove the battery and "field charge" it with some other charger, all bets are off. The Futaba circuit is probably conservative in every direction.

All the charging circuitry and control is internal to the transmitter/pack. The charger supplied with the radio is essentially a 12V power supply. 12 volts/ 2.5 amps.
Given how long these packs can go I cannot foresee any reason other than poor planning to need to field charge them. 7-1/2 to 8 hours of "ON" time per charge should cover even the longest day at the field.
