Default Pinion choice for Lepton

Hi!

I bought a flybarless Lepton Ex recently and while searching for parts I came across an all new Lepton Ex - never flown stock but some parts have been taken off it. So I'm just going to order a heck lot of parts and motor pinion is one of them.

My flying style is F3C like, with influence of mild 3D. Big loops and large sweeping turns. So I might say that I want a calm yet enough umph to turn it around. I'm going to fly it on 4S lipos. Stock motor and ESC. The manual says 24 teeth, but a f3c flyer told me that going down on pinion size wouldn't hurt. So what do you guys think of getting a 23 or 22 pinion instead? Or should I go with the 24? Thanks for taking your time!

You will have trouble with the tail rotor if you slow it down. The 1:4 ratio is too small. Hirobo should have modified the plastic belt puley to give us a 1:4.5 ratio. World of heli was selling this modified pulley but not anymore. The only way for you is to use the KBDD tail rotor blades (for protos/lepton). Much longer. And put some thickness between the frame and the landing gear because otherwise the tail rotor blades will touch the ground. This way you may use 22 to 23 teeth indeed.

Hi,
I bought a built but never flown EX last winter. My flying style is similar to yours, no hard 3D just loops, wide turns, flips, and general flying around. It is a great heli and I bought a second used one for spares.

Put it together with the Hyperion HP-3025-10, 815KV motor and 24T pinion, 4S 3700mAH battery, Castle Creations ICE 75 ESC. Gaui 500 landing gear and the KBDD 70mm tail blades that Rotodingo mentioned and the stock FRP 425mm main blades. I'm running a HS between 2600 and 2800 RPM in idle up and it flies great. I notice a slight tail drift the closer I get to 2800 RPM. It also flies good around 2300 RPM for just forward flight. No loops or fast banked turns.

HDX has a 13T tail pulley for their 500 that is very similar to the one for the Lepton but a little wider. If you have a way to take a millimeter or two off of the HDX aluminum pulley then that will increase your tail speed a bit. I have done this with mine and it works great.
