How strong is the 425 basic?
Just wondering how well do these things survive crashes? I ended up having a whole electronics package for 500 size heli (3rd grade stuff but still decent enough to play around with) and thought of getting the basic kit as beater and trainer.

They take a good beating - I did finally manage to destroy a frame - but it took a death dive from about 150 feet high and a new frame is only about $20
Ideal trainer IMHO |

it will serve you well. flies very nice, and takes a beating. plus if you do duff it and crack a frame they are dirt cheap to replace.

I understand about the frame but what about things like main rotor housing, blade grips, tail case etc.

So far, I have only had one crash with my 425 and it held up very well. The ball link on the elevator arm broke during a flip and I lost elevator control. By using the aileron and rudder I got it into an upright , nose-in orientation and hit the TH and tried to get it down as best I could.
It came in fairly smooth, hit on the front of the skids and flipped over forward on it's head. The only damage was a bent fly bar, and of course the broken elevator arm that caused the loss of control in the first place.

I think that basic is a great deal , probably one of the best deal out there for a 500size.
Nothing wrong with plastic , look at the Logo helis probably one of the best flying heli , yet the frame and head parts are plastic.. all plastic are not equal , you have E-flite, Walkera plastic AKA junk then reinforced stuff like Mikado, Gaui. I have been flying my 425 for a while now and it's great, built for under $400 with 1 set of batteries.
