The same setup would be possible to convert a big lama to brushless.

Another brushless Lama V4 RTF
Hi,
My conversion is now done and it's been a really fun project. It flys longer, more quiet and with lots of power. If I push the battery down to 3,2V per cell I can fly about 12,5 minutes. I can keep on going for about 2-2,5 minutes more, I'm down into ground effect and stop there to avoid wearing out the battery. I used basically the same components and layout as Tomfn, thank you for the documentation in the begining of the thread, it's been really helpful. Ofcourse, thank you to all others that have contributed with their problems, frustration and solutions. Components used. 2 x Turnigy Plush, 6A esc (Weight 2 x 6gr) 2 x Modified ELE C10, 2900Kv motors from Strong RC motors. 1 x Turnigy V Tail mixer (Weight 3gr with shortened wires). 1 x MKS 191 head lock Gyro (Weight 4,8gr) 1 x Spectrum AR6300 receiver (Weight 2gr) I've also shortened most of the wires to reduce weight and get a tidy installation. Attached are some pics of the heli. Still need a nice canopy to go with it..... /Bo

Point65 - very tidy and nice installation.
I am yet to re-visit mine and fix it. Time has gotten away from me this year to play

Thanks for the feedback guys, I have now question to all brushless flyer's:
Flying tends to get "wild" with the brushless motors and so do the crashes.:o After landing upside-down last week the rear motor / top rotor does not rev up to full speed and it seems that the bearing(s) in the motor bell damaged. Currently it doesn't have enough power to take off. If I push the outer part of the motor sideways, there is som minor play that doesn't appear on the other motor. The outer part and shaft is still screwed together without play. Get a new motor or repair with spare parts? Any tips on dimensions or suppliers? /Bo

An update on my previous post:
I have now stripped down the motor, replaced the damaged bearings and rebuilt it. Works great now. I had an old copter X tail where the link arm had 5mm bearings for a 2mm shaft. However, the main problem was not the motor, I found out that the gyro was fried by connecting a spare servo to it. A new one on it's way in the mail. /Bo

A "short" description on how I replaced the bearings:
After disassembly, I managed to push bearing #1 out through the hole in bearing #2 using a 1 mm hex key, angled and gently tapping with a small hammer on the inner rim of bearing #1 and gradually shifting position. Shifted the bearing tube around with bearing #2 down, placed it in my needle pliers resting with the little ledge as support. Using a 3 mm hex key, gently tapping again on the outer rim. Viola! The bearing tube at the bearing #1 end got a bit "enlarged" and the new bearing slipped in without friction and some play, so I applied a thin layer of super glue, let it dry and then it could be put back without play. Pressed in bearing #2. Done. /Bo

Howdy point65, awsome setup u have!
Since u show it, Im wondering if the boom holder post is now sagging backwards with that xtreme tail boom? im looking to buy the xtreme boom very shortly but that seems like a soft spot, specialy without the canopy adding resistance in the sag, i think the canopy plays a role in holding the boom in place... |

thanks alot for that info, I will order the tail very soon with peace of mind thanks to u, i might request the xtreme motors as well, im sure they make up for the cost with their life span (and heat dissipation) regardless of performance...

Long time no post about my little brushless lama.
I finally rebuilt my little little brushless lama after I stripped it for the few parts I needed to build a stock Lama v3. When I ordered the bits to replace the bits I stole I ordered a few more hop ups too (CF chassis). I think it now has every Xtreme upgrade part on it you can get for the v4. It all went together pretty easy except I had to sand down the plastic spacer part on the Xtreme outer shaft so the gear would line up correctly with the motor pinion. Not sure why it was like this, probably caused by the combination of xtreme chassis and the brushless motors. So I knew it wouldn't really work on 2s as I had tried before and for some reason I can't get the speed controls to go to full throttle or even close so I didn't have enough power. So I modified the battery tray area by cutting some bits off and adding some spacers to fit my 3s pack in neatly. I tried flying this before (months ago) with 3s and it ended badly with me flying it into the roof then the floor the roof then floor again all with in about 10 seconds. This resulted in a mangled fly bar, stripped inner and outer gear and a bent inner shaft. That was pretty much the last time I flew it. I learned the hard way 3s is a lot of power. This time I reduced the throttle down to 50% and the flight was much better. The thing flies beautifully now. I ended up bumping it up to 60% and it could possibly be bumped up a bit more still. It's a bit strange that it will fly with 25% throttle on 3s but barely flies with 100% on 2s. I'll post some pics up soon hopefully when I clean it up a bit and get the canopy on. |

My lama is a great flier, but not what it should be.
2x C10 from hc (modded by me) 2x turnigy plush 6a turnigy v-tail MKS gy191 gyro receiver half of orig. 4-in-1 Optic 6 Tx Every time I plug in the batteries, the throttle endpoints reset. Like this: plug batts in dee-dee-dee beep-beep gyro changes from red to blue beep-beep-beep beeep ---ready to fly--- The throttle is re-set each time. It is driving me crazy. I want to fly with 2s batteries, but I can't because of this issue. (can't get full throttle, so 2s batteries hardly lift my chopper) help! |

Your tones are normal. It's not your throttle end points resetting.
It's the ESC saying that you're flying a 3s battery. The musical tone at power up "De da da" means it's got power. The second two beeps "beep beep" mean everything is good. The third set "beep beep beep pause long beep" means that you are flying a 3s battery and the ESC is initialized. The reason you can't fly with 2s batteries would depend on the battery. A stock esky lama battery is 10c 800mah. That means the max the battery can put out is 8 amps. The c10 motors are rated for up to 5.1 amps each. Meaning in order to get full throttle out of them you need a battery capable of outputting at least 10.2 amps. The Turnigy v-tail mixer from what I can tell is a .5 to 1 mix. Which is why your throttle is limited. I found that setting the ESC's upper limit using 50% throttle gave me full throttle. With my chopper setup that way I can get a 10:30 flight out of the stock esky battery. 10:30 of boredom since the motors put out about the same power as the stock brushed motors this way. Here's a link to my youtube playlist with various outside flights and FPV video from my Lama V4. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=7039F7551FEA0436[/ame] |

Setting up the ESCs for the BL lama is always tricky... I've done it many times with different brand ESCs, but every time it seems different. But so far I found the ELE 6A ESC to be most compatible, with either the C10 outrunner motor or the RZ400 in runners.
Here I'd like to share my favorite video of my lama v4. It's flying with 3s 420 battery. It is already quick with 2s, and the 3s makes it really jumpy~ I love flying it outside though [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-tgZ-vjaqhg[/ame] |

The Turnigy 1811 brushless motor have 2900kv and an 8mm shaft. One of the comments on the product claims that it will fit in a Lama v4.
Anyone can confirm this ? Any comments would be appreaciated.

At $17 it won't break the bank to order them and find out. The shaft diameter on it is 2mm and you can always make yourself a set of shafts out of piano wire if you need shafts that are longer.
The 8mm it lists is the amount of shaft that sticks out of the motor. In order to use on a chopper you have to push the shaft back so that it sticks out the bottom. It looks to me like you'll wind up loosing a couple of mm off the length of the shaft due to the motor mount. |

I'm Jasper, from The Netherlands. Got the Lama v4 for my Birthday, 2 years ago. Spent a lot of money on it: Already bought a longer innershaft, Xtreme kit, Xtreme blades en Xtreme skids and other replacement parts.
So: I understand the Diagram: http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/attac...mentid=2090630 Can you help me with my setup? I got this: Turnigy 1811 brushless Outrunner 2900kv http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbyking/s...trunner_2900kv OR BL Motor Package--2 2900 Kv C10's modified with longer shafts and 8 T pinion gears http://www.strongrcmotors.com/Motors.htm 2x TURNIGY Plush 6A /.8bec/6g Speed Controller http://hobbycity.com/hobbyking/store...idProduct=4318 GWS V-Tail Mixer II (200 step) http://hobbycity.com/hobbyking/store...idProduct=4170 Corona Synthesized Receiver 6Ch 35Mhz (v2) http://hobbycity.com/hobbyking/store...idProduct=6497 Hobby King 401B AVCS Digital Head Lock Gyro http://hobbycity.com/hobbyking/store...dProduct=10113 I'm not sure about the Gyro, I don't know what it exactly does, and I hope this one is correct. This setup is about $100 - $110, that's pretty much money. I don't want to spent too much money (Real Dutch guy here =D). No I mean I prefer to order everthing on hobbyking in one parcel for a good price, than 3 different locations and high prices. So I prefer the Hobbyking motors. |
