Finally got around to drilling out the DD motor that’s going to be used in my TT/belt modded DD CP450. I still haven’t got around to buying a set of mm bits, so had to start out with a .169 bit which is close to 4mm. Lined everything up and went for it. It took 11 bits ending with a .199 bit to get the job done, but I’m happy with the outcome. I took a few pictures as I was doing it to show.

Helihankster, thanks for sharing the process to drill the hole to 5mm!
It gave me the courage to try it out myself.

I'm excited to see your completed stretched belt-driven / torque tube tail very soon...

Pretty cool HH. Now any 5mm shaft can be used if you have a set screw pulley. Have you found a shaft that will work if you are going cp and beam gear?

Right now the shaft I’m going to try and use is a solid Esky King 2 shaft I’ve had for awhile. Back when I did my FP King 2 conversion, I ordered some spare shafts from USHobbysupplies. Instead of getting the normal hollow king shaft, they sent me solid ones. Being solid shafts I couldn’t use them for the king conversion so they got thrown in the parts bin until now. I still had to enlarge the hole for the beam drive pulley as the King drive pulley uses a pin instead of a bolt and nut to secure the pulley to the shaft.

Okay I just re-read your post and that’s not what you were asking…sorry. My answer is no and a small maybe. No haven’t found a shaft that will work with the beam drive pulley using a standard cp fb/fbl head yet,, but I would say maybe the stock beam main shaft will work if using the new Align dfc fbl head or the clone dfc head I’m going to try out on my build. The clone dfc style main rotor housing is 5mm shorter than the standard fbl rotor housing. This 5mm gives back what the short shaft takes away. Should be no problem getting full pos. and neg. pitch. One other thing that’s cool about the VWINRC fbl head is it has an upper and lower hole for mounting it on to the main shaft.

Hey Hank,
Don't forget your tail rotor is going to rotate backwards.
That head looks neat...how's the quality and where'd you get it from?

Aw $h!t…You’re right ScotY, the tail rotor will be rotating backwards. Honestly I hadn’t thought that far ahead…just been concentrating on how everything inside the frame was going to work out. It might not be that big of a deal…I’ll start by flipping the tail blades and maybe the grips and see how the tail holds. If that doesn’t work then I’ll flip the whole tail assembly over. And if that doesn't do it... guess I can always spin the main rotor CCW.

I got it from Infinity Hobby.
http://www.infinity-hobby.com/main/p...oducts_id=8115

My verdict is still out on the head. The metal finish looks cheesy, but overall it seems decent. There’s a little play in one of the grips, but to be fair I haven’t had time to take it a part yet to grease the thrust bearing or mess with it. Don't know for sure yet, but it says the 450 Pro feathering shaft is compatibly...so that's a plus.

On a side note, I received the belt today and boy did I screw up…It’s about 10T too long. Will place a order for a new one on Monday. Fingers crossed…the next belt will fit.

Bummer on the belt HH.This is how I measure for a belt. I get a piece of string and wrap around both pulleys and mark where the string meets, then lay the string out straight and measure how long the string is.That is your pitch length . Pick the belt that has the closest pitch length . Another way to do it is cut that belt that is to long and wrap it around the pulleys then mark how long it is or count the number of teeth. That might get closer than using the string method. Either way I get some belts one tooth above and below the pitch length.

Hey Hank,
It's no big deal, the tail will work out. You could flip it over to the opposite side or flip the grips around. Yeah, ideally it's suppossed to turn up into the downwash but I'm sure it will function fine. Just wanted to make sure you knew so it didn't spin around on you if you didn't change anything.

Thanks JC
Tomorrow morning will cut the belt and mark it as you describe, then place a order for a new one on Monday. Yeah I used the belt calculator on SDP website. One of the fields must not of reset last time after I entered one of the dimensions…cause now it’s telling me 71 instead of 82...urrr. O-well, I’m not in a super hurry anyways as I haven’t even picked which servos I’m going to be using on this puppy.

Thanks for the heads up ScotY. Most likely I would have caught it once the tail was installed, as I always hand turn the head to make sure nothing is binding. Yeah, I’m with you…think it’s going to be fine running CW down in to the main rotor wash.

Man HH it sounded like the battery was just shut off. Did the esc just go dead in flight?

Yeah either the esc cut off or signal was lost. I really don’t get it, I’ve had over ten flights on 4s with no problems.

I did not do so good today also. Had my 3rd FPV flight on the quadcopter, lost video signal and down she went.Walked 2 hours in 20 acre field before I was lucky enough to find it.

Sorry to hear you lost video signal Bud, but glad you were able to recover the quad. Was there much damage? Do quads break as easy as helicopters or do they fair better in a crash? I know if anything hits hard enough, its going to break. I’m just wondering on average can a quad take more of a beating.

Here's another possibility for a direct drive motor driving a torque tube tail.
I extended the frame to accommodate the the 360mm blade since I do not have the longer torque tube and boom yet as what Helihankster has.

With this setup, I can have a choice whether to position the motor underneath or on the side. I have shown both options in the pictures.
For the motor, I'm testing the Cobra 2204-58 (1080KV) to see if it can handle the load.
The other motor in the pictures is the Scorpion S2205-40 but the 1551 KV is too high for a 3S setup (otherwise I have to use a separate 2S battery to power it up)

The torque tube & tail parts I used are all stock without modification.

While I have ran the motor using the two configurations, I did not have a chance to fly the heli yet.

This kind of setup, gives a better balance. The previous configuration I have has the motor driving the tail directly but it is too tail-heavy that I needed to use a heavy battery and increases the all-up weight (AUW).

JohnnyCat & Helihankster,
Do you have any other ideas on how to attach the tail assembly (motor, torque tube, boom) to the frame?
The CF plate extension I used has some bit of flex.

Comments and suggestions are most welcome.

I hope to do some flight testing this coming long weekend :-)

HAROLD
