Starter shaft stripped - replacement available?
I have a Century one-way hex start wand that just recently stripped on me. The hex ball end rounded off and has become useless. I called Century up and they don't sell just the extension part (without the one-way). Does anybody have a solution for this? I know its a 6mm shaft because they say its reversible... I can't simply cut a ball hex driver because it needs to be round at the top where it goes into the one-way. I'd just hate to buy a new start wand because of a cheap part gone bad.
If I have to buy a new wand, are there brands that do offer replacements for the hex wand, so I don't run into this same problem? Thanks, Angelo

You could go to Sears and get a long 6mm hex key...Hack off the top end (angled) part... make a dimple ( like on your original shaft) and put the set screw back in ...That would be my first go at it.

Just as info for anyone out there with my same problem, I was directed to McMaster-Carr (http://www.mcmaster.com/), part number 6972A54 (Ball-Point Blade 6MM Hex, 6-45/64" Blade Length). I ordered a couple at $1.76 each and will report on how well they work.

Yup - got them the other day. While I was waiting for them to show up, I pulled apart a Quick UK start shaft (no one-way) to see about using the hex from that. When the ones from McMaster Carr showed up - guess what? They are identical to the one used in the Quick UK start staft. Don't know if Quick UK uses the same supplier as McMaster Carr, but you can't see a difference. I popped one in the Century start wand and started my Fury with it. No issues! Bottom line - works great and dirt cheap!! Don't know how long they will last, but I do know that my Quick UK hex shaft has lasted a lot longer than the Century hex shaft.
Thanks to z11355 for the info - he supplied me with the part number and source Angelo

Thanks very much for the valuable info!! QUK stuff is top shelf.
Not to Hijack your thread, but is the starter with the one way that much better than one without the one-way bearing. I used one with one-way for a while, then one without (JR bolt on) for the last 8 months. What is the difference you can tell Angelo or anyone else?

I had heard that the JR shaft was made of a very soft metal.
Glad to hear the mcmaster part worked out. Certainly cheap enough to get a few spares! |
