I've setup my MD8 with a 1400-1800rpm headspeed and speedup gear. It flies with good tail authority in all orientations and headspeeds. At the lower headspeeds, I wouldn't want to be without the speed-up gear.

For my MD7 build I'm shooting for 2100 headspeed. I'm wondering at what headspeed does the speed-up gear become unnecessary (or even a drawback)?

When you refer to the speed up gear, are you talking about the steel tail output gear? If so, the stock gear is now 9t instead of the previous 10t.
