Default ESC

Hello Protos people!

I have/had a 500x until Saturday when a broken built caused a massive crash that has broken about 80% of the heli.

I have a Protos that is waiting for an ESC and FBL.

I was thinking of taking the ESC off of the 500x and running it on the Protos.

Here is a link to the specs,

http://www.horizonhobby.com/products...-x-EFLA370H#t2

They say it is a 70A

specs state a 50-75 continous draw and 100 max peak for 15 seconds.

No governer, I think.

If it will work. In idle up what should I set the max throttle at I was thinking the curve would looke like this, 95-92.5-90-92.5-95

Thanks

Doug

I had to dig a bit to find the specs on that esc. It definitely looks up to the job on paper. I'm seeing its capable of 6A max bec output at 5v which should be plenty, but I didnt see a nominal BEC rating anywhere.

E-flite is always stingy with specs for some reason.

At some point you might want to replace that esc with a YGE or similar. Having extra features like a governor and active freewheeling is always nice.

Not sure about that throttle curve. What size pinion are you using? I'd find a head speed calculator first before trying to run at 92% throttle.

I'd have to agree with Kavic

I have that on my 500x iv had no problems with it , but no soft start, take a look at the YEP esc, they run great, and you cant beat the price if you can get it from us hk it wont take 2 yrs to get to you. thats the only bad thing about this esc if you order from china store it takes months to ship

I checked the pinion. It appears to have 15 teeth on it.

The 500x idle up was set at 90% straight across the board. When I would go to stunt mode it was a huge change from normal mode. It flew great at that setting though. Very predictable.

I will see if I can find a head speed calculator. Where should I start looking?

By my questions you can tell I am new to actually setting things up. I am eager to learn and want to understand how it all works. The helis I have been flying are already so setup there is nothing to do to get in the air. Now I want to know more.

Thanks again for your help.

Doug

I thought 92% throttle seemed a bit high for 15t but wasnt sure why. So I managed to dig up a good thread.

https://www.helifreak.com/showthread.php?t=366409

And if you are wondering what 100% throttle will do... (click the title bar if the video doesnt embed properly)

Protos 500. Scary headspeed (1 min 46 sec)

As for head speed calculators heres a simple one.

http://heli.dacsa.net/calcv3/

I'm not the guy to ask on head speeds, I fly around with a 14t pinion at about 70% throttle and get 6 minutes flight times even with my well seasoned packs. My CC esc says I'm around 1900rpm or so.

I'd suggest just starting at about 70 percent throttle with that shallow V curve and just bump up by 5 percent until it feels right.

Thanks alot for the info. I have had some down time this morning so I have been reading up on HS calcs etc. It is interesting for sure and there are many schools of thought.

I noticed in the thread you linked too a couple of the setups had their head speeds between 2600 and 2900 where as yours is 1900. I guess it really is a personal preference and flying style driven setting.

I just wanted to be sure I wasn’t going to be running too low or high and damage something right off the bat. Taching it once it is setup will be no problem. I will start there so I can figure out my real numbers and make a baseline starting curve from there. Probably be right in the range you stated 70% to start.

Thanks again.

I run mine at 100% throttle and with a 15T pinion half the time, no problems. I'm thinking that Gorn guy in the video might need to loctite his screws or be merciful and quick to his protos. Kavic, I like the idea of a stretch 12s - running at 1900 must have a whole different sound than what I'm used to. Furias, tell us how the esc works out.

No stretch here. Just 12s 460kv, a few other mods and a whole lot of leds.
