But that is a very good question. Especially if your backup pack is sized for minimal flight / emergency landing time.

Intersted in some thoughts and comments here. I like the idea...
No real way for you to know. Any battery monitor is going to show OK in the case of the BEC working or not working as you have the backup pack.

The only thing I can think of it the heli is going to be sluggish as the little NiMh pack
loses voltage as it's going to go dead pretty quick. Luckily the voltage is going to taper down slowly, unlike LiPo or LiFe.

What if we add a nicad battery monitor for the backup pack, and the new startup procedure was turn on the backup battery first, check the battery monitor, then connect the main battery to the Jive. Wont help detect an in flight failure, but may give an indication of a low batt or bec failure prior to next flight..??? Would this work...???

That's something I've been pondering, but obviously no telem on the dsx12. I'm wondering if you can use that spektrum telem transmitter by itself, powered off the jive/vbar, and use that new spektum telem receiver and a iPod touch. Don't know if that telem transmitter will work without a spektrum rx...? Any thoughts..?

Yes that works for me. I have led ramp type RX battery monitor and its really easy to see the difference between only the buffer pack (even fully charged) and buffer pack in parallel with Jive BEC. Just stress the servos a bit and the voltage drop will be visible when running with just the buffer pack.
