Default Servo matching

Hi

I'm a newbie to CP. I purchased a Innova KDS 450QS. Was learning well ....... got caught in a gush of wind...... got all excited and crashed .... few parts need replacement.

I want to change all (Cyclic + tail) the servo's to metal gear . What are the correct and good quality replacement for KDS Servos?

I'm guessing cyclic servos are easy to find match. But what about the tail servo? should it match the gyro / anything else?

The Gyro is a KDS820

Cheers
Lucian

the tail servo is usually faster speed and less torqus than the cyclic servos.

Thank you for the response, I am in need of much more help though.

I bought the KDS out of impulse. I'm thinking of using the same airframe and upgrading. So when parts break / wear out I am thinking of upgrading with better /reliable brands. (I'm not running down the KDS brand, I think it is a good budget heli)

I want to know what are the better quality / more reliable servos I can replace the stock KDS servos with. I want to know the brand and model. For now it should match the KDS 820 reciever and Gyro. Later I will change the radio and gyro also. So eventually I will have good electronics.

I'm not sure if this approach is possible. Please let me know.

well, imo, as the heli gets better the servos need to as well.cheep servos do not usually center well and you always chase the heli. align makes a good servo without breaking the bank.

Default 450 Servos

450 Cyclic servos are usually 9 gram servos. Measure your existing servos length, width and depth. And make sure the replacements will fit into the airframe.

For cheap and good Analog Cyclics, Tower Pro MG 90 are really good for about $7 US each. Don't plan on doing fancy stuff with them, but they do last a long time.

For higher-end Digital Cyclic. Turnigy's S306G-HV are VERY good about $23 US each or Futaba's M0025 $22 US

I've had two sets of Aligns 415 crap out on the bench or just after 10 flights. (magic blue smoke and everything) Other pilots have had better luck, but I sure don't like em.

Keep in mind digital HV servos are power hungry specially if combined with FBL controllers.

For the tail servo you can consider the 9257 series from Goteck, E-max, ect.

Basically you want torque on cyclics and speed on rudder. If you run HV servos close to or above 6 volts. on cyclic then the tail servo must also be HV or use a regular non-HV digital servo with a step-down.

Hope this helps some

You are on the right track, but 6 v is not considered as HV. 4.8 to 6 v is pretty standard for most servos. It has also become more common for tail servos as well. HV servos run in the 7.5 volt range. Basically HV servos run straight off a 2s lipo.

Default Conclusion

Dear All,

Thank you for taking the time to explain. Very Much appreciated.

So if I summarise what I understand.

For Cyclic I need torque
For Tail I need speed
The one thing I should look for is the matching size.
The brand does not matter
I will look for standard voltage (4.8 to 6v)

Note: Additional info after I posted my question: I will be using digital because the existing KDS ones are digital.

Once again THANK YOU.

Cheers
Lucian

servos for 450's are usually called micro size servos. I'd look only at digital servos. They don't cost much more than analog and do not have deadband issues. Some name brands are Savox, Hitec, and MKS. Some common cyclic servos for a 450 are:
Savox SH0257MG
Hitec HS5065MG
MKS DS92A+

As others mentioned, tail-specific servos trade torque for speed. One of the very best tail servos for a 450 is the MKS DS95i but that is a 760 microsecond center pulse type and your gyro may not support that. Standard servos have a 1500 microsecond center pulse.

Hitec HSG 5084MG would be a 1500us type tail servo for 450's

Yes, you need torque, but you don't want super slow servos either.

For Tail I need speed
You definitely need speed, but having decent torque will also help make the tail feel more solid.

Everyone has their favorite brands. Hard to say what is best, but there are certain ones that you want to stay away from.

Cyclic servos are standard for going to 6v. Tail servos often are only designed for 4.8v. I switched all of my heli's to 6v tail servos so I don't have to use a step down for the tail. Since I have done that, I really like the results my tail have given me.
