Yeah, unless they used the elevated tail shaft to put some extra long tail blades on, they tail will have to spin as fast as a comparable heli, in which case, that belt is going to be FLYING in the tube.

Not following you?? Longer tail blades would be slower for same force. And the belt only goes as fast as your HS dictates. Im pretty sure belt speed isnt an issue. Look at belt driven 450's spining 3500+RPM

With longer blades (enabled perhaps by the tail being raised), they could maintain tail authority with slower tail RPM. This would mean they could gear the ratio between the headspeed and that tail shaft 'differently," to move less belt. The headspeed only determines the belt "speed" by virtue of the belt drive gearing. In a fast 450 @ 3500, the tail rotor gear is very small. Half as many teeth would rotate twice as fast for same belt speed. I don't know the ratios of a 450, and while interesting, it's not direct comparison to other 700s and large belt-drive helis.

Ya OK I get ya. But also know, the faster a belt moves around a pulley, the less friction it has. Its why Belt helis are really efficient when spooled up, yet don't spin as free as a TT when spun slow, like by hand. The faster a belt moves around the pulley, it gets thrown off it, so to speak, and acctually has less tension on the pulley, yet is tighter in the boom. That's why we need cogged belts, to ensure tooth engagement with the pulley. Larger pulley will also flex the belt less, resulting in even less rolling friction.
My B400 tail pulley was worn, teeth were almost smooth. At a 2700RPM, I could do tic tocs FBF, etc etc no issues, But ramp to 3200, and the belt was flying off the pulley and loosing contact. Tail blow outs everywhere, even on a lot lesser demanding moves. Small pulley, less teeth in contact and more centripital force pulling belt off pulley at speed

If I get a P700 I want a hacker motor to go with it. Only makes sense, what with the purple canopy and all.

IMHO, the most efficient way to get more tail authority is to spin it faster. Bigger blades will sap too much power and tend to stall sooner. It would be relatively easy to bring up the tail gear ratio above 4.75 by making the tail drive pulley a few teeth smaller.

So you are the photographer?
I have a hard enough time getting the heli in the shot, let alone looking as great as those! I'm guessing there are a lot of shots on the cutting room floor?

Yesterday i took about 700 photos.... many are out of focus and discarded, caused by very fast movement of heli.. What do you mean with "I'm guessing there are a lot of shots on the cutting room floor?" i don't understand, my english isn't very good... |

Not blown away as I had hoped to be. It's getting harder and harder to re-invent the wheel.

Sounded like about 2150rpm. Crank that up to 2300rpm and it will rip.

AHS 2012
I was yesterday in lodrino and here is small video of protos 700, I shot a little because I just had to watch it in live, heli is the beast is too good, fast, agile, and power,
helicopter going in my collection that's for sure, because when I heard only the sound, I was impressed, heli earned the highest grades in my opinion! I hope I helped [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QdZ5uE7LWOg&feature=plcp[/ame] |
