Hello,
Is there word if Skookum will support UDI with its FBL units?

Net yet, but there are rumors to support X-Bus from JR (which is a derivate from UDI protocol definition and 100% compatible)
Cheers, Nils |

I had asked about this and was told that there should be support coming with the upcoming "Spring" release of firmware for the SK-720. Jeti currently has a "beta" version of their receiver firmware that supports UDI but the released beta version doesn't support external telemetry yet. I'll need both pieces before I can do anything with them.

All these differing competing radio standards are harming the market for FBL controllers.
FBL manufacturers should only have to stick to a standard communications protocol and make it up to the radio distributors to provide support for this standardized protocol via satellite receiver, etc. The S-BUS 3 channel Futaba and spectrum satellite receivers set a good example that everyone should follow. Too much inefficiency. People should be able to use their radio of choice instead of waiting for FBL controllers having to support everything out there. Traditional receiver support is old and clunky, its 2014. The spec can be easily upgraded while retaining backwards compatibility.

I believe that is what UDI (Universal Digital Input) is supposed to be for. Hopefully like mentioned before there can be at least some type of standard that can be used to minimize all the flavors of protocols.

For people who really care about maximizing the frame rates of their transmitters, the only way to get a 8ms or 11ms frame rate into a FBL controller is by direct proprietary communication. Even though my DS-16 has a 10ms frame rate to the receiver, the PPM protocol runs at 20ms so my effective frame rate at the FBL controller is reduced to 20ms because of the communcation protocol. IDE is very similar but at 17ms. There currently is no faster standard protocol to communicate with. Unfortunately supporting JR's new recievers using X-Bus will be slower than using direct DMSS satellites, but that would eliminate sending back telemetry. Realistically for most of us this doesn't amount to a hill of beans. I know I can't feel the difference, but a few advanced pilots say they can.
