Just realised I never posted my setup here after finally settling on components... and then I changed a few things around more recently. The current setup is:
Original version Triabolo 700 NHP 690 mains and 110 tail Dekker Pyro 700 / 530 Kv Jive 120HV (originally had a K160 on it but discovered that amp draw was really quite low) R2 Prototyping cap pack as a buffer RJX fs 0521HV servos on the swash Fut BLS276SV on the tail Spartan VX1N 13 tooth TDR pinion for low headspeed on 12s

I used to have a Diabolo set up with a Pyro 750 running 14s with a 115 amp Jeti Mezon and had no issues. Like Trillian I had Kosmiks and found the amp draw to be low enough that it was not needed. This leads me to question are the high amp Kosmiks really needed? I see at the beginning of the thread that many people were using other smaller ESC's without incident. Then people start to change and most are using the higher amp ESC's. Is this overkill just because or are others doing something I am not that causes higher amp draws? I know speed runs cause higher but what else am I missing.
I ask because I am returning to flying after about four years off and am planning on going the Diabolo route again and am trying to decide if I was missing something before and was just lucky even though my amp draw was well under 100 given my mild 3D/sport flying?

You'll see no higher peaks now than you did 4 years ago with your flying. The push to higher esc nominal ratings has been driven by progressively harder 3D and certain speed models that were overamping and causing the K200 to run a bit hot.
The one thing to be aware of if you happen to choose a JivePro120 which replaced the PowerJive while you were gone is that because the esc has such a fast processor, it will pull back power at 160amps or more peak when the PowerJive wouldn't "see" them before they had already passed. Identical current specs, but JivePro is much "smarter". Ben Minor |

Thanks for the reply. You confirmed what I was thinking. I looked back in my records and found that my KDE 700 motors on both my Goblin 770s had average amps of 40-50 with spikes up to around 200. I switched these out to Pyro motors when I switched over to a Diabolo and Triabolo but as my memory serves I believe the amp draw was no more with these two motors. My flying style has not changed so think I don't need to go crazy with high end ESC's. If I get crazy later I can alway upgrade if needed.

I'm not sure that is the good ratio Gear. It's for the 700. The 700 UL is a 600 stretch. Then, the main gear is 210 and not 196...... Simon

You realize the 700 UL is not 7 years old like the post you quoted and the 600 also did not exist back then as well?

A friend of mine flies a Diabolo 700. I never really paid much attention to it until this summer when I gave it a close look and was quite impressed....enough so that I decided to order one. Since I already have a few 700s, I decided on the Diabolo 600. It's complete and ready to fly. Just need the snow to go away and the temperatures to go up!
Diabolo 600, Classic canopy with carbon fiber windshield, black Diabolo decal and Tenax rear canopy mounts. Skids and head with follower arms are from the UL. I'll be starting off with a 20T motor pinion. KDE 600XF 530 kv motor 12S 3300 Thunderpower and Gensace IKON2 Jeti REX 7 receiver KDE R2 cyclic servos Futaba BLS276SV tail servo Rotortech 610U main blades Rotortech 105 tail blades Kontronik Jive Pro 120HV with a heat sink 2S lipo backup in parallel with Jive Pro BEC
