I keep hearing this (again today at the field) and still don't believe it.. "the governor affects the ability to overspeed the head". Surely the energy from the heli is picked up from the blades and the one way bearing enables the head to spin faster than the governor setting? How can a governor slow the heli, it just doesn't makes sense. Can someone educate me?

That's true to some extent. Without governor your no load head speed will be higher than your loaded head speed. When you overspeed moderately, your motor will still be able to provide some power to the rotor, making it easier to get a overspeed. When you are on crazy over speed mode, the rotor is no longer driven at all because the rotor spins much faster than the head speed the motor can provide.

Right but he was referring to slowing down the headspeed. It's impossible. The one ways in helis will not allow the motor to do any braking. It will just spin. It "may" add a tiny bit of drag IF THERE WERE braking set in the motor, however ALL heli governors shut braking off. That's only for planks.

The real trick to getting a good overspeed on Mcdoogles is to go to midstick or zero pitch right after applying the negative. That's what creates the overspeed, not the negative pitch. The negative pitch just makes the heli drop faster. Same thing as in autos. Going full negative pitch on an auto won't give you a ton of headspeed at the bottom, it'll give you less. The blades spin up faster and easier with less pitch.
