Default Scorpion HK 3536 and CC Edge ESC 6-8S

Hi!

A vendor wanted to make sure I was making an informed purchase and asked me if I knew that the Scorpion HK 3536-510kv motor would not work with the Castle Creations PHX Edge 100A ESC as it needs to run at 12S (the ESC maxes 8S).

I noted that I thought it was rated for MAX 12S, but that it could operate fine at my planned 6-8S on my TREX 600efl.

I've written Scorpion, but am I not correct? Is thee something I don't understand?

The EDGE 100A is not an HV ESC... it handles 8s max.

It will work on 8s, but you wont get the headspeed you need... either get an HV ESC which will work with 12s, or get a higher KV motor.

Ahhh... darn it. I thought it would be enough, but doing the math it comes out to no more than 1700... Thanks for pointing that out!

Going with a Scorpion HKIII-4025 890kv on an 8S setup for a head speed est 2700 rpm. My 500's and my other 600 run 6S, so I wanted a spiffy sport setup.

Thanks for the guidance!

That should do with your current setup! Sometime in the future I would definitely consider 12s though, the cost is not too much more.

Thank, Bacon. My other 600 is a 12S. I bought it new-used (they guy built it, hasn't flown it), and i need to take it apart and vet it before I fly it. It will be the first 12S machine i have ever flown, and frankly the idea of that much power scares me a little. The 8S setup was to be my step up. I fly sport, so for me the win is less amps, more voltage and power, better battery life.

I appreciate your advice! Thanks!

That is a very high headspeed for a 600.
I would recommend somewhere between 2000 and 2400rpm depending on what you want to do with it. Most people seem to fly a 600 around 2100~2200rpm.

Thanks, DannyG, that's important for me to know. I am leaning towards keeping the motor but changing to a HV ESC and making this a 12S machine... I liked 8S as I have a lot of 4S batteries I could run in series, but truth be told they are getting a lot of cycles on them and I will need to buy new ones soon. They might as well be 6S... My other 600 is a 12S so it spreads the wealth around to just make this one 12S. Other than the be benefit of lower amps with higher voltage battery life, my kind of flying skill doesn't seem to need 12S power.

2700 is indeed too high for a 600, but that setup would be fine to run governed at a more proper speed since you need some overhead to govern anyway.
