Sorry to hear about your ZYX issues. Glad you were able to land the model without damage.

Have you tried the Robird FBL unit? I've good things about it as a budget alternative. I'm considering trying one on my next build.

Yeah, I'm loving the brain too. Piro compensations is awesome.

Just curious if you needed to tweak the tail "I" or "D" gains in the Advance Setup menu?

I've made sure to follow proper methodology (good mechanical setup, smooth tail, no governor,) and while my tail is good, it's not great. I'm getting tail wiggle in flips and tic tocs. I even widened stick deadband a little to make sure it's not unintended stick interaction. I don't like to dip into the advanced menu but feel I've run out of options. From my understanding of PID controllers it seems like "I" gain might be too low?

Here's the whole story from another thread:
Bummer! Had a couple of downs myself last week, just put it down to static (now better grounded) and ESC too weak (I'd just stretched it).

The stretch has made it a bit tail heavy. Need to address that.

Got a few flights in yesterday and it seemed to go well. But still doesn't feel as locked in as my mini with the zyx.

Doc, any chance you could PM me your zyx setting for your Protos? Couldn't find anything specific in the FBL forum.

Cheers, B

I flew the crap out of my Protos 500 today and it was flying beautifully until the tail started to jerk around a bit and the belt snapped. The main gear caught and it fell out of the sky.

Realistically I should have landed it when it was doing funny things on that last flight. I was thinking hmmmm... so when I give it really hard collective the tail jerks to the side and made a noise I will remember... LOL!

I'm not blaming the heli in the least, it was desperately in need of having its belt changed as it was still using the original belt that came with the heli over two and a half years ago. I was actually curious how long it would last. I have a spare sitting in a drawer

Anyway I figure I have maybe $30 in damage, even the Radix main blades survived with no damage, the Canopy is fine. it looks like one main grip, one canopy mount, a slighly bent boom and the 90 degree bottom plate are toast. I'll need to check the bearings and shafts but the drive train wasn't moving at all as it fell, so I think it will be fine.

I really do enjoy how this heli flies it feels very well balanced and smooth and has lots of zip!

I think I'll just make it a point to replace the belt every season. FYI this is the first crash my Protos has had in over 18 months. It feels like a natural extension to me and just never gets into trouble.

I admire your serenity in the face of such calamity as crashing a Protos...

I took mine out for a few tuning flights for the new G31. It's getting there, but there's only so much tuning I can take per flying session...

I have the Robird on my P500 and really like it! It's just a little more money than the ZYX but it has a program to connect it to the computer for setup and vibration analysis.

Did a quick test flight in the back yard after rebuilding it.

Pulled my little air brush compressor out for the first time and started to spray my Protos Canopy in a flourescent orange that is even brighter than what I was using before.

What vibes? My Protos barely registers on the G31 vibe log. I get a few peaks in the dark green when I throw it around, but that's it. I always knew that the P500 is a smooth machine, but this is the first time I've got hard data to show it. :

I just rebuilt mine and I'm seeing < 0.6 G's on my SK-720. It's a very smooth heli !!!

My Protos 500 has the lowest vibrations of every heli that I've ever owned.

Yeah, I never worried about vibes but now that I have a way to see them its fun to play with.

I just flew my perfectly smooth Protos today and the motor died 2 minutes into the first flight.

At first I blamed the motor. My friend Matt suggested I check the ESC - Motor bullets....

I pulled a bullet right off !!!!!!

I wonder if intermittant motor power is what caused the belt to jump earlier ?

Luckily the belt didn't jump and I auto'd it down into some soft mud. No apparent damage other than my ego.

Bad solder joint! Geesh!
