What soldering tips?
I am looking to buy a Hakko fx-888 soldering station. I plan at some point to do a BL Mcpx as well as other board soldering (I assume it's only a matter of time before I blow a FET).
Any recommendations on what size/shape tips are most useful for doing this type of soldering? Thanks! |

A fine pencil tip is what I use on these small PCB's... I did use a regular pencil tip also, but that was only because I didn’t have a fine tip at the time. It worked, but it was tricky.
The tip you want it similar to the lower one in this picture.

You have to size the tip to the work. Fine tips are only going to carry enough heat to work well with small parts. You might get away with a smaller tip than you need, but you will be leaving it on the part longer, risking component or board damage. Above everything else, keep those tips clean! Wipe em before each joint, when you put them back in the stand. Dirt and burned residue is the enemy of heat transfer. It will also accelerate tip wear. |

I have the hakko you speak of. I really like it but then again im comparing it to a radio shack. I use the tip that was supplied with the kit that is probably 1.8 to 2mm chisel tip for bigger stuff. I bought a .8mm chisel tip for the smalls and it works great.

Notice that you are pretty close by.
It depends on the solder and what board you are working on. You can find out what is the lowest temperature you can barely melt some solder on the tip. Then add about 100 degree to it. I usually work at about 450 - 500F on my weller. |
