I don't know how to pick a lipo
I'm getting very close to finishing my Protos build and I'll be honest, I have no idea how to chose a lipo. 4s 5s or 6s?
My setup will be: Stock motor w/ stock pinion Stock yge 60a ESC Align ds510m cyclic Ar7200bx Not sure what tail servo yet tho. I'll be doing mostly sport flying with mild 3d such as flips and rolls. I'd like the lowest head speed as possible tho. Any help? How many cells to power my servos at the proper voltage? What MAH rating? |

I use 3000mah 20c 6s with my Protos and do basically the same flying that you do. I get about 6 minutes flight time, longer if I just hover around.
http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...dProduct=18638 2650mah will work and I have a couple of those but I like the 3000's better. http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...dProduct=16187 Moto |

The Protos performs best on 6s. I use 2600 25C Gens Ace and they balance the COG perfectly.
On 4s, you'll likely pull huge currents, impacting component service life. If you built a scale bird, maybe you could fly 4s, but for any aerobatics, I'd stick with 6s packs. Anything lighter than 500g will work great, 2600-3000mAh, 25-35C.

For tail servo, I'm using an Align ds 520

I prefer to think of my servos as rebranded OEM Savox

MKS have had their hits and misses. But the ones that do work and are not ridiculously overpriced are very nice servos. I have a DS760P on the tail on my Protos and the performance is amazing. I tried a Fut 9257 and a JR 3400G on the same airframe, and they both pale by comparison.
Now, for cyclic, I think there's more wiggle room in terms of servo choice. I've flown expensive, mid-grade and cheap servos and the differences are minor, nowhere near as impressive as the tail. So my current approach is to save money on the cyclics, and use the difference towards a top of the line tail servo.

Cell number affects your motor too.....the stock motor is made for 6s I think.
Then you still have to decide on C rating and capacity. Unfortenately, there is no standard on C rating. This means that in a recent test, Gens Ace with 25C discharge rate were slightly better as Turnigy 40 discharge packs.....so don't believe everything you read from the producers of lipo's about C rating. Then there is also your flying style...beginners have absolutely no use for a 40c pack...while 3d smackers will love a higher C rating. Capicity is mostly about flight time, size of the pack and weight of the pack. C rating will also affect weight and size. Now just take your time to select your packs. Personally I do only have experience with e-flite, turnigy, hyperions and Gens Ace, of witch for my flying style only Gens Ace and Hyperion are suited. Also please take some time to read/learn about breaking lipo's in and storing them. Your batteries will last more cycles if treaded properly. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

A 450 usually comes stock with a 3s motor. Except for the Warp 360 of course.
Upgrading to 4s usually means a power increase, and less heat generated. This is because of the higher voltage of the 4s packs. Upgrading to 4s is just as expensive as upgrading to 6s, or at least close. That's why some people directly upgrade to 6s. On a 500 you should probably go just 6s. If you need more power, you can always throw a more powerfull motor in it, or higher C rating packs. Haven't seen a 500 on anything else yet. They might exist, but 6s is probably good enough for most pilots. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
