Default Servo choices for Protos 500 FBL

I have the BK mini's I want to use for a new Carbon Frame Protos 500 build.

They are: 3 x DS-5001HV (cyclic), and 1x DS-7005HV (tail).

Would those work (assuming separate HV BEC, adequate power, etc) or do I have to modify the frame??

I also have the MKS 9767 (cyclic), MKS 9780 (tail) that I was going to use for a Logo 480 xtreme build and I'd rather keep for that.

So, what are servo choices these days ??? BK's ? MKS 9767/9780?

Or the old MKS DS-9660A+ (cyclic), or Futaba 9650 (cyclic), or Hitech 5245MG (cyclic) ??

thanks

Default Servo choices for Protos 500 FBL

I use MKS ds9660a+ with ds760 for 2 years.

More than twenty crashes without changing any pinion... And always a perfect feeling.

HV setting is spending money for nothing on this heli I think.

You don't need exceptionally strong servos on this bird. I run a set of jrs on it.

If I were building one and had choices I would opt for plastic mini servos all the way around. This heli is built to be light. Adding weight takes away from the experience of the way it was designed. This heli has challenged me to fly differently.

I dont think it will fly bad with a set of bk or rjx, it will fly just fine. But those servos are more meant for the heavy G500 or similar bird.

I just got a set of RJX 0391 servos for mine. I just need a new tail servo and some tail components to rebuild mine. Upgrading to CF frame with stretch, and fixing the tail. The tail vibrated so much that it exploded, luckily I was 6 inches off the ground and hit TH a fraction of a second before it exploded.

I also wanted to mention that I will be running a stretch 6s setup.

Yeah, I can see advantages to using 6V servos like MKS 9660A+ -- they are fast and torqy enough and will probably run great on the built-in BEC of the MSH/YGE 60A ESC.

The specs on the HV MKS9767 and the BK DS-5001HV servos are insane compared to the older 4.8/6V servos. Whether that's really needed for a stretched CF (with alum upgrades) Protos 500, is another question?!

Anyone else, please feel free to chime in.

thanks!!

I assume you are referring to the RJX HV MiDi cyclic servos -- FS0391HV ? I think it's similar in specs and dimensions to the BK DS-5001HV except the BK's have a narrower dead-band from what I remember.

Did you have to modify the CF frame to fit the FS0391HV cyclics ? They have that full-size servo motor sticking out.

You can put the RJX FS-521THV standard tail servo. They even sells 4 servo RJX sets - 3 cyclics + 1 tail -- in case you were starting with no servos.

Wow -- why did your tail vibrate & explode ??

Yup the FS0391hv servos. No mods necessary with the plastic frame so I would guess the same fit with the cf frame. I got an awesome deal on the cyclic servos in the HF classifieds, I will be going with the FS0391T for the tail.

Yup, vibrations. It was plaqued from day one, the tail rotor hub wasn't drilled right. I thought I got one that was good but apparently not. No more worries about that, I got the Lynx rotor now, I just need the slider and case, lever is still useable. The explosion threw a tail grip, broke the case, slider and cut the belt.

been running savox 1250s for cyclic almost 3 years and just starting to show signs of slop. Going to be upgrading to MKS HV97 series, overkill?
Yeah, but my Protos deserves it at this point. Been beating the crap out of this thing since I learned to fly!!
I also have Gryphon BEC and MKS HV tail servo from my 380 Gob that I sold, May as well put to good use!

MKS 9767 are very good cyclic servos. I got a set to put on my Logo 480 xtreme build, but not sure if I want to use them on the Protos 500 CF instead.

I'd bought the BK DS-5001HV's to use on the cyclics of my Protos 500 CF build -- hopefully the frame mods will be minor.

I've been using Futaba 9650 servos since 2011 with the compatible MKS metal gears since 2014 and a Futaba BLS 251 tail servo always.

Still flies like a dragon fly on steroids

9660A+, BLS 251. Hard to imagine it flying better.

Looks like I am a little late to the party, at $41 a piece from aloft the kst 515's are hard to beat on cyclic. Plenty of power and speed from the factory yge bec. But since I had an extra gryphon 10amp bec laying around, I started running them at 7.4v. After more than a few crashes, 2 of which required new frame halves, they are still running smooth.

Oops those in the previous post definelty aren't tail servo's.
Mine came with a Pro Modeler S74110CLHV titanium gear, coreless motor servo.
120 Oz - in
.04 sec/60 at 7.4v (2s lipo is max)
760ùs 560mhz
I had never heard of these and not sure who actually makes them but it has a hybrid case and seems to live up to its specs.
Apparently this model has been discontinued, but they have a similar one in the brushless flavor with 140 Oz - in and 0.03us /60deg travel.

It had been good so far quick enough to run 120 degree or more throw to the mechanical endpoints. And has survived 2 tail down crashes that took out the boom and tail case.

The kst's are awesome, I've got four running on 7.4V. (Heavy tho). But I couldn't run them on my old 10A CC Bec, it dropped out of the sky. Had to go to the CC Bec Pro. Maybe the gryphon is better than the castle, or else you might want to keep an eye on that 10A Bec.

A bit late again, but for anyone reading, I also run 6600uf of capacitance along with the gryphon bec, 67 flights on this setup no problems, receiver voltage as read by Ikon is 7.7v at idle and 7.5 volts while stirring the sticks, on a volt meter spikes as low as 6.9 can be seen.

Rc helicopter fun has a good article on digital servos
http://www.rchelicopterfun.com/digital-servos.html

I talks about digital servo power usage and links to an article that explains how it relates to amperage and Capacitance as well as why some 5 amp bec's are quite a bit more powerful than others.
