Default Starting Out With The Sim

I just got bit by the heli bug and figured I would start out with a sim while I am still deciding what heli to get. I picked up RealFlight G3.5 and I have to say it is great. I spent about 2 hours behind the controls last night and mostly did the hover training lessons. All I can say so far is that I am glad the guys at my LHS talked me into the sim because I would have already been back picking up blades and a lot of replacement landing gear. RealFlight gets an A+ in my book and I highly recommend it.

Default I am researching buying a heli...

I was also advised to buy a simulator. Can you advise which ones would be best and what to look for?

I am wanting to eventually get into a Trex 600 or Raptor 50 for ap purposes. So, if anything specifically helps there then please advise.

Realflight is the "most common" simulator it works well and lots of other people will be flying helicopters online.

Any sim is better than just going out and buying a helicopter

I have Phoenix and love it, however after using RealFlight 3.5 at the hobby shop I like it as well. It wasn't as smooth as phoenix - but that could have been due to the computer it was running on.

If I had to choose again I'd go with Phoenix over RealFlight, but Phoenix doesn't come with a controller so you need to take that into account. RealFlight does have some nice features that Phoenix doesn't, such as damage to the craft. In Phoenix you either crash completely or the heli keeps flying fine. In RealFlight you could break certain parts of the heli and you have the chance to try to recover and come down controllably. I liked that feature of RealFlight a lot.

I am also a mac user but unfortunately RealFlight doesn't run on a mac. (I got my company to send me a pc for "home" use) I beefed it up with a better video card and some additional RAM and use that for RealFLight. When I am not working from home that is.....
