Default Lynx tail grip question

I'm wondering about how I should go about tightening the Lynx tail grips onto Lynx tail blades.

The grips came with washers and brass inserts, but my new Lynx blades also come with brass inserts. I think the washers are only for non lynx blades, but I'm if the Lynx blades just go into the grips with the brass insert and that's it. I'm concerned because there's lots of back and forth play unless I really crank down on the grips which bends them inward onto the brass inserts. Is this inward bending of the grips ok?

The washers are for the standard 4mm root tail blades, Lynx included.
The Lynx metal grips are made to fit 5mm root tail blades.

Hope this helps

That's what is weird. The brass inserts on the Lynx blades fit into the stock plastic grips without need for washers, but I'm not sure what I should do on the 5mm lynx grips because there is still a gap with the inserts only used. And the washers don't fit over top of the inserts. hmmm.

Have a look at the pics of the blades on the lynx site to see what I mean.

Forgot how wide those bushings were and had a set of 5mm tail blades for my setup.

Playing with a CNC tail and set of Lynx blades now, Needed to install it anyway
Tightening the grips down to meet the bushing is not horrible, but it still leaves an bit of play.
Shims appear to be .5mm thick, a bit of reaming will allow them to fit over the bushings or you could file the bushings flat and insert the shims??
The bushings will press to one side pretty easy.

I will keep playing with them and see what I come up with.

Yep, was thinking of boring out the shims to slip over the bushings, so will see if that can be done easy enough.

I'll post back on how that goes and keep you in the loop.

As always, much appreciated, Bill.

I bored out the shims using a drill bit clamped in the vice. It took two sizes of bits to step it up to fit over the bushing. Could fit a shim on either side, but the blades were too tight and I didn't feel comfortable with how loose I had to have the screw so I dropped it down to a single shim on each, on the surface facing the boom. Works good.

1 shim for me too.
Used a small round file to ream the hole.
Seems to work well, blade has some tension on it now and screw is far enough through the grip for me to be comfortable.
Might try a longer screw and two shims just to keep the blade from rubbing the grip.

Still need to mount it on the heli...

You think the rubbing will be a problem? I figured once it was pulled into place by centrifugal force, all would be ok.

I may have longer screws too, I'll see if I do. I have about 1mm hanging out the back.

Doubt it, I go through tail blades pretty quickly.
Seriously though, it was just a thought. If the blades are that tight with two shims might not be worth it. I have not tried two shims myself.
Also going to try other blades just to see how they do.

I have not played around with any upgrades for some time.

I'm hoping for good weather so I can try out this new tail assembly and longer tail blades. Hopefully I'm not messing with gyro gain too long, trying to dial that in.

Cheers!

It was getting late, I had deleted my post. The bushings serve 2 purposes, fill larger bolt hole in blade as well as properly space plastic blade grip. I use the Lynx blades but do not have the cnc grips.I was thinking out loud about removing the bushings and just running the shims. after I posted and re read I realized bushings needed for bolt dia. as well.So should be left in place.Question becomes, Are the bushings too long for the cnc grips, or the shims should be drilled larger?

Hope you get couple good flights in today

Going to get second flight, hopefully few more, on my recently Lynx'd out Protos 500 today as well before the weather turns to ka,ka!
