Swash plate bearing
Hi guys,
Do anyone know if the large bearing in the swash plate is replaceable or not. Mine is having around 1mm vertical play and I can change the collective pitch a few degrees easily by moving the main blades with my hand. I have ordered a new swash plate already but I don't want to ditch the old one as it's pretty new and the swash plate is quite expensive. Can anybody share your experience if you have successfully replaced the bearing? I flied my bird for 6 gallons of nitro only and I don't do hard 3D. If I have to replace the swash plate every 5 or 6 gallons that would be a bad news for me. Thanks, Wallace |

My swash is sloppy too, happened pretty quickly.......I would say in under 20 flights. I would love to replace it with a better bearing if someone knows of one.

From looking at mine it looks like the top half of the swash plate is just press fit into the inner bearing race and once that part is out the rest self explanatory.
I would try it but my bearing is ok for the moment but once mine has gone I will try it and judging from this thread I may not have to long to wait.

Well, if no one has done it in a couple of weeks, I'll tear down my swash and measure the bearing and try to find a good replacement.

I was able to disassemble the swashplate by heating it in oven and using a screw driver to separate the top and bottom half. Like SMJT said the top half was press fit into inner bearing race and pressurized by some kind of "blade" to fix the position. You would know what I mean by looking at the picture below.
The size of the bearing is 20x27x4. I think it's not difficult to get one from local bearing shops. The only concern I have is whether I can prevent the bearing from getting out from the top half after installation as I don't have the right tool to 'lock' the bearing. Any thoughts? |

It looks like you need a specific tool to flare that out I am not sure what but maybe it will lock back in when you rein install the bearing.

I don't think that tool is available in hardware store. I will get some align green locktite from hobby shop to see if it works.

does anyone know if that the same as the x5 ? cause they make a tool to separate the swash and offer a bearing.

I don't know if they are the same without doing some research. I found this old thread though:
https://www.helifreak.com/showthread.php?t=331226 Here's a pic I found of the X5 swash, the new one is on the left. Although the same size main shaft (?), it does look bigger/wider.

I got two new bearings from bearing shop for just a bit more than 10USD.
First of all I put the inner race in the freezer and then I started to insert the bearing into the outer race. In this exercise I found that the 3 screws cannot hold the bearing tight so I decided to add a bit of green locktite to the outer ring of the bearing. I believe this might be a good starting point to check if you have vertical play issue. After an hour I get the inner race out from the freezer and apply a little bit of locktite to the inner ring of the bearing. I can then put the top half and bottom half of the swashplate together without applying too much force. I found a clutch bell from my VOneRR in which the first gear is just slightly smaller than the inner race of the top half so I decided to use it 'lock' the bearing. By giving it a big hit with a hammer I have one spare swashplate in my box! |
