Default Utter noob questions, advice please

I looked for a noob's guide on here but didn't find one.
I'm wondering, is there such a thing as a basic FPV set up? Can I simply get a set of goggles and a video TX/RX and fly FPV without all the gimbals and nonsense? Just to see what it's like?
What would you recommend for such a basic set up? Budget is an issue, but I don't need to go so cheap that I can't use the gear moving forward.
Thank you,
j

You are right, you dont need all the nonsense- to some degree.

My DJI F-450 has on it, a 910 Mhz vtx and Sony PZ0420 camera. On the Vtx I have a low pass filter and the camera has a LC Filter which is something you can make in about half hour with $5 worth of parts from Radio Shack. Both the camera and vtx run through a toggle switch so I can them on or off while the quad is on. For HD video I have a Sony Action cam that I used their hard slide mount and it is mounted on the bottom frame. When I fly around my house I often fly without it on. Even with it on, I dont see the much difference in performance or loss of flight time since the camera is fairly light. Since the HD camera sits on the bottome I need to raise my quad. I use some garden hose stakes from Home Depot that cost $1.48 total, as seen here https://www.helifreak.com/showthread...t=landing+gear.

If you are new to this, when mounting the camera and VTx, I would try to zip tie as much as you can until you find the right spot for everything. I like to see a little of my props in my camera so I can get a feel for how my quad will fit through a tight spot.

Oh, good point about the seeing the bald tips. I was thinking I wouldn't want to see them, but that is a really good idea.
Why do you need a low pass filter on the video transmitter?
Thank you,
j

I have not tested it to see how much of a different it makes but the low pass filter should cut out any noise above the 900 mhz range and since everything else on my quad is running at higher frequency it should filter those out.
or as stated on Readymaderc.com

this low pass filter can help you improve the performance when using your 900MHz video equipment. This low pass filter helps reduce interference from spurious transmissions that could cause decreased range of 2.4GHz RC systems, servo twitching, or reduced reception of GPS signals*.
