I love seeing videos of noobs..makes me feel like I'm not alone. This is from a year ago.. I took close to a year off while we were moving and then finally got my helis unpacked and back to hovering. I was amazed that I've gotten alot better since this video but still a noob.

Keep flying folks. We will get there some day!

Nice!

I vaguely remember those days. A few thousand hours of stick time ago... It comes with time and commitment, just stick with it. And get a sim!

yeah I bought a sim..wasn't the same..something about having your hard earned money on the line makes it much more stressful. haha

I've been using my SR to work on my skills. I take the 450 out and do some hovering but that's about it for her. I use the smaller cheaper (to repair also) birds for skill training.

Yep, that works for a while. I did most of my early learning on an MCPX.

At some point, though, your skills will outgrow the capabilities of smaller, cheaper helis and you'll end up needing the sim. It isn't the same - that's actually not a problem. It's primarily useful for mastering orientation awareness, in every axis, and from any position or direction of travel. You can also force yourself to care when you crash in the sim, and then it feels more like the real thing. But it definitely is not equivalent to the real thing.

I upgraded to the Phoenix Simulator and at same time had bought the Real Flight simulator.. I was doing inverted flight and flips in the sims...so of course I decided to take the MCPx outside and attempt doing a flip. I spooled up..got it about 10 feet in the air, begin doing the moves that I watched on youtube and practiced on sim...and BOOM..it crashed in to the driveway. I was unhappy and laughing hysterically at the same time. Reminding me flying sim isn't the same as real life. thankfully all I did was damage one of the servos..so waiting for the new one from ebay to arrive.

That is true, of course. It is a "simulation" after all.

The venerable brushed MCPX in real life is very underpowered and can easily blow out the tail if too much collective is applied. The brushless model is much more capable but breaks much more easily.

Anyway, when I said "your skills will outgrow the capabilities of smaller, cheaper helis and you'll end up needing the sim" - that was what I meant. You can learn all of your orientations and flight directions on an MCPX. It's a little tough because they're so small - tends to get away and you lose orientation - but can be done. However once you get into technical maneuvers, it won't be able to keep up. That's when the sim becomes a necessity, IMO.

Still, one can fly in the sim for years before picking up their first real heli. When they do, it won't take long to realize that A) the real thing is a lot harder to fly in some ways and easier to fly in others and B) "I got this".

Last note - most people start trying to flip and roll long before they have their orientations down. I did it too. Heck, I'm still working on some orientations trying to make them second nature. But taking a fundamentals-first approach, one would learn all of the orientations before messing around with flips and rolls (apart from half-flips to get into and out of inverted.) And if you went that route, the MCPX would be an entirely capable trainer for a long, long time.

I love seeing these!! Reminds me of the early days of my flying. So much more fun watching than just the usual inverted, tick tocks, spins, etc. !!

Enjoy and have fun. Copters are great because you can fly them almost in your back yard. No need to go to the flying site to have fun!!

Default The loop/flip

Hey guys,

Yesterday I finally did it.....I looped/flipped my 450 3d. A few weeks ago I performed a few loopings/flips with my mcpx bl and it was a kicker! Right after that I flew the 450 3d but chickened out. Yesterday I was flying some stall turns and all of a sudden I decided to loop. Maaaan......another shaky thumbs moment! From now on I will never be the same rc pilot......I can loop! I need to adjust my gyro gain a bit to avoid the tail wag but other than that.....I'm lovin'it!

-Angels can fly because they take themselves lightly-

Very nice! Wait till you try it on a FBL heli. You'll never want to fly upright again.

Thanks guys!

For now the only time I will fly inverted is when I fly my trusty and very valuable Phoenix sim
Maaaan, if real life flying was like the sim it wouldn't be that much of a challenge,,,,,which is probably what makes this hobby so much fun!
Anyways....keep 'em in the air

Just got the Robird G31 installed. Had expos all screwed up so it felt weird. Check out the description. It's a freshly converted 450 3D.

Default First post after intro thread. I have video to share!

Can't seem to get YouTube embedding to work properly. Not sure if it will show up properly after I post, but the preview doesn't.

Anyway, here's a link in case it doesn't.

Stoked to be here to share in the world of RC Heli's with you fine folks.

Just put the direct link to the youtube video (not a playlist) in the post and it will auto-format to embed it for you.

Learning to fly an RC Heli in 3 days | No Crashes! | 1/3 (3 min 57 sec)

And really nice job. Videos like this can be really helpful for people just starting out who have completely unrealistic expectations about how quickly they'll learn to fly. That said, looks like you picked it up faster than most.

Thanks Hemp!

I'll try that video posting again here. Kind of a funny little thing that happened today.

That rock? It was a fly!

Here's another one I made from my flight yesterday. First video I've ever put Picture in Picture. Pretty fun!

Ahh! My 600 blades are covered in bloodstains from all the insects flying around my field.
