I believe that DDahl will chime in on this....

During the testing for this heli, they got the heli to FLY on 12s, but any kind of 3D and it was a dog...

Why not buy a 2S like this:

http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...Lipo_Pack.html

and add it to your 12S.

You'd have to match the battery to your existing and make a new "W" (as opposed to a "Y") lead but that would be the cheapest way to use your existing packs.

Yes, but exactly what do you mean by "perform"?

I don't know what your experience level is, or what type and size helis you have experience with. But imagine a normal 11.5 to 12.5 pound "700 class" heli on 10S. Or maybe a 500 class on 4S, or a 450 class on 2S. They'll fly...but by most pilot's standards, not very well.

Smaller blades? Same thing. Fly a 700 class heli on 600mm blades. Most would say the disc loading is far too high for good flight performance.

For any type of respectable 3D performance, the XXtreme 800 needs 14S and 800mm blades. If you've never seen one in person of picked-up a RTF model, it's quite large, and although not too heavy for an 800mm disc, it's too heavy for an 700mm class disc.

My son Kyle flew and competed with the XX 800 in 2011using both 813mm and 753mm blades (the 753's used a higher head speed and collective pitch range), but frankly in retrospect...the heli flies best on the larger 800mm disc.

Now all that said, using the exact same set-up as with a 14S pack, but simply changing to a 12S pack, results in a head speed range down in the 1400-1500 range, which is fine for "sport flying" (no collective pumping...just circuits, and forward flight FAI F3C type maneuvers). Flights with this set-up are 10 minutes on 5000mah packs, and with the lighter packs, the heli is incredibly light on the disc.

Hope this info helps. You're not the first to ask the question (-:

This is Timo flying on 12s from 800-1650 headspeeds...so 3d is possible. Am getting an 800extreme and planning on going 12 for slow smooth 3d at 1650. I know I have posted this video before but want to make it known for anybody getting a used extreme 800 that thos 6s lipos you have laying around can be used on this heli.

With the high discharge rate of today batteries, this is no longer an issue. I would drop a 4530 450 kV and fly it on 12s anytime.
