Oh, I see now... it's a tricopter , I had my eyes on the one from Australia, I believe, made of wood. The idea of easily replacing the wood was appealing. Now, bending things back in place is even better. It seams Scott has a thing to make things sturdy... I like it

All great guesses! Yer close! Something that is gonna revolutionize fpv and put it in the hands of many folks who otherwise not get into it.. Cheaper (than most heli rigs)... And at a slower pace for a more relaxed feel and flights! Anymore guesses?

OK, how much is it going to cost? I only have one arm and one leg left.

That's it! We all know Scotts great skills at building, marketing, and just plain ol' gobs of information! He's got a tricopter in the works that will be offered as a kit...it takes all the guessing and trial and error out of it for the end user... Or just knuckle heads like me who can't build a paper airplane...I'll let Scott explain the Tricopter and it's details... I've seen some photos and will soon have one in my hot little hands... This thing is gonna be sweet!

I believe the one made of wood was reported to fly for about 12 - 14 minutes with 2 pounds weight. This is carrying a 3s 5000 mAh lipo and a doll with a gun on it (I think it was supposed to be Rambo's girl or Barby recruited by Rambo ).
When I was looking at the tricopter, I always wondered if it would be possible, save, or OK to mount a parachute in the middle to be activated with a switch. Why? well as a safe thing and if any of the motors fail. The two particular posts I saw, the guys had problems with the ESC, I believe. OK enough talking... where is Scott to show us the goods.

I was looking at the site and came by to see if there was any info here on the 6061 Tricopter. I really like the idea of a aluminum tricopter frame as I've been known to splinter apart wood. Makes perfect sense to build out aluminum...it's a heli not a planker...not alot or any wood balsa helis out there....lol. I would just need the frame as I have most of the gear already needed and it looks like he will have both RTF and frame only option. Now the price? I see Mongral at RCG has a tricopter wood frame for $70 whitch seems spendy for wood but aluminum at around the same price would be way Cool!!!

6061 Tricopter pics
After spending over a year researching the tricopter and asking many questions I decided it was time to jump in..Thanks to pilots like Mongral, Signguy, lesnewell, cyhyam and recently 0636 for their insight i believe the Tricopter will be a good FPV/AP platform for slow FPV flying that I like to do from time to time. Also much less of a threat when I'm videoing with persons close by. In no way will it replace my CP helis but add another option for stable slow flying.
Why aluminum and not use Fiberglass, G-10, Wood or Carbon Fiber? although these materials are good they lack the ability to with stand a crash as well as aluminum....and if bent, can just be flatten back out so your good to fly again. Also if added holes are needed to mount cameras, etc... the aluminum is still going to be strong where the others materials become weaker and even can splinter and/or separate the laminated layers making them much weaker. If you have ever drilled a hole in CF, fiberglass, etc.....then you know what i'm saying . Since the 6061 Tricopter is made from strong light weight aircraft aluminum it can take the stress of RC flying better then the other materials not to mention it looks sexy on the ground or flying overhead..... I'll be test flying it this weekend. More Pics/video soon! Light weight and Strong 6061 Tricopter Frame. Optional Extended battery tray allows a 450 class heli canopy to fit with it. Bushing isolated booms provide better vibration dampening and allow Tricopter to better absorb impacts. Complete frame with yaw mount and optional battery tray is under 300 grams. Dimple die holes make it even lighter and stronger.

It does look cool. Forget about the wooden ones. I look geek enough with the other stuff already. This looks so cool that might be chick magnet. Hope to see the "ORDER" option active in the very near feature. Not in a rush.. I'm still letting my arm and leg grow back out

I'm using the 401b gyros like the hobby king but mine are XMhobbies...same thing I just paid a lot more . I have 3 Castle Creations Phoenix 25 ESC and 3 Eflite park 480's with 10x4SF props. Of course there's cheaper set ups but I had everything but 1 motor so I just had to get a new 480.
Got it all flying at work in the shop today...to windy outside for a good maiden so I'll wait till Sunday. In the shop it flies really nice and stable once I got the gyros set. That's the only thing that takes a little time. I'll get the FPV gear on it after it's all good and tested.

I have about 30 test flights now ...mostly in my garage and shop because of wind. I have crashed it about 15-18 times and so far I only needed a $2 prop each time....cheaper then crashing my CP helis. Most of my crashing is for testing different mixes, gains, etc...but as set up in the beginning as most other Tricopters, it had no issues....until I started messing with the darn thing....so now it's back to the way it was when I first put it together and flying stable and smooth again.....what I learned was "what not to do" and "what to do".
These copters are fun but they have some dangers like....no throttle cut...so when you plug in the batt it's armed and ready....if you move it, even if you have the throttle off..it will spin the motors so that can be a concern it you plug in the batt and then move the tricopter to another location....so I now only plug in at the take off site. When I'm done flying I immediately unplug the battery without moving the Tri. Just got to keep this in mind at all times The Tricopter is very nimble and can do multiple flips, spins, etc...I now have my D/R set at 60% and expo at 70% which makes it very tame a stable now. Setting the stick rates is very important if you want some stick travel other wise it can be a handful. My Tricopter also can lift heavy payloads like 12oz +. I have flown mine with a 5000mah 3S lipo and all the FPV gear on board and it felt a little heavy on the sticks but also tamed it a little more too...so weight isn't such a bad thing . As of now all my gyros are combined to one channel for gain changes...even the yaw gyro. My gain is set at 21% which seems low but any higher and the Tricopter becomes twitchy. I'm told that you can put the Yaw Gyro on the gyro gain channel (Ch5 on my 9c) by it's self allowing you to have better yaw control and put the other 3 gyros on the throttle channel and adjust the rates with the throttle curve settings but when I did this my tricopter took off and flew by it's self before flipping over and crashing....another prop to replace. So I have them all back on channel 5 till I figure out what I did or didn't do right....and now it flies nice and stable again. The 6061 frame is great as I have crash tested it many, many, times ...wood or CF would have exploded with some of my crashes....they don't call me Crash9 for nothin . I'm using; 3 Eflite Park 910kv 480's...overkill on power. 3 Castle Creations 25 amp ESC 3 APC SF 10x3.8 props 4 HK-401b gyros 1 AR7000 Spektrum RX 1 3s 2650mah lipo weight ready to fly with FPV gear 45oz. flight time 8 minutes with 2650 and 14-15 minutes with 5000 3s lipo. 6061 frame test is a success and I will be selling the frames next week on my site and later a complete tricopter More info and video soon...... .

Just a comment on the motors power, I have added a switch the power feeds to the ESC's. This allows me to power up the RX and gyro's and allow then to stabilise, then when I'm good and ready I apply power to the ESC's.
Easy to do and works just fine and is a tad neater than fiddling with deans connections. Mike. |
