Default Maiden takes a hard right dive!!!

So as per asking in the club thread, I am making another thread. The maiden did not go to well. 3 ft off ground and a hard roll to the right!! Now before you go off, and some have posted preflight checks. YES, I DID THAT! Stick command left roll, swash LEFT ROLL. Roll heli to left, and swash compensates roll to right. Fore aft was good too. But upon lift off, she went slight right roll at first, then increased and BAM! Threw the batt 40' too!!! This was on my 700 Nitro. Didnt have canopy on at time, which is why flight pack got thrown.

Even get home, recheck controls. Yup, it responds as stated

The things that come to mind is some sort of mechanical failure. A link breaking or popping off, a servo dying and not responding.

Possible vibes? Do we all use the spartan tape or 3M? I have always used the 3M on my elecs. Used the supplied tape on this, And have a metal plate applied with 1 layer 3M then the Spartan tape then the VX1n. Tearing it off the 700 now and replaceing the BX on the 450 for tests. The 700 will be a month atleast. busted up bad, even a frame

Same thing happened to a friend of mine on an Align machine. Plug the heli up then using your thum put a slight load on your cyclic servos. See if they all "hum" the same tune. He had one that was not in tune with the others. Swapped it out and no more problems.

Let me ak this. Do you check the led on the vortex before flight. I know on the vx1e it will be solid blue if boot is ok. red if the vortex boots but the gyro didn't initialize quite right. It will still fly but not near as well. I know when i crashed last time it was still blue. The question is did you get what color the led was.

Also the data log may be something to look at. Plug it up to the computer and download it. That may reveal what's going on.

Good point, I have noticed that the spartan will show you a red light if slightly bumped on startup. Its very sensitive.

So it's now installed on my 450. And now, after the initial headaches of the first one. The setup of the 450 was a breeze!! Less than 1/2 the time of the BX. Tomorrow I shall test in flight. I know my 450 is mechanically sound

You must leave the heli steady on ground or bench while power up the vortex, it doesnt initialize if heli is moving.

As for 3M tape, I use it on my gyros too. Both the VX1n and VX1e are attached on mine with3M outdoor tape. The VX1n is on a TSA 600n amd I have had no vibration issues.

I am using some Tesa hard outdoor tape (a 3M equivalent) and also had no issues with vibes on my VX1e. You should have extreme vibrations to really confuse the gyro and make it roll on its own with this kind of tape. My suggestion would be to check all your wiring cause maybe you had a cut wire somewhere that went unnoticed or a servo connector that backed out. I am surprised that the logs show nothing though...

So, upon dissasembly, Finding the upper main shaft bearing is notchy as hell. WAY more notchy than just the crash I just had. And the upper clutch bearings seem tight in the alum support that came with my heli. Mnovy, the creator of FAD main gears used to own my 700, and think the main gear and clutch support are some of his prototypes.

So the notchy mains might have been the cause, some bad vibes I guess. Completely stripping her down, all bearings that are even close to suspect are being replaced. As well as adjusting the RPM pickup and adding another pickup for the Taranis Telemetry

It's pouring rain right now, so havent been able to test the VX1n on the 450

I am glad you may have found the culprit of the crash. I hate not knowing what caused it because then you always have that feeling. I hope it all goes smooth with the Vortex from here. Its a great system and I hope you get to see that.

Crashing does suck, especially some sort of failure crash that wasnt a control input. My last 5 crashed have been from some sort of servo failure...

Hopefully later today. My 450 was tuned the best I could ever get it with BX. Pretty solid except for a Aile bobble on tic tocks/hard collective stops. We shall see how Spartan handles this.

OK, 2 pack flown in the parking lot across the street. Seems OK. Still have a nasty Aile wobble on tic tocs. Just like with BX. Must be heli related. Tail gain, seemed a little low at 25, upped to 30, and wag on hard collective. Also set for 500*/sec but doesnt seem like it. Will have to double check TX and that its getting 100% signal.

Also, I never changed any Expo in my tX. And I see the VX1n has expo setting in it. Should I 0 those out?

You should zero-out the Expo in your Transmitter. Use Expo in the Vortex only for the best experience. Definitely don't run both.
