Zero cost crash...
Well it was until I twisted off the bolt on the bottom of the main shaft.
The season started a bit late up here in the north east and yesterday and today were the first days I got to fly two days in a row. I was lucky enough to fly the MiniP, Logo 400, and the Rush 750. I got some flights on each and yesterday went so well that today I was getting cocky. Well, you know how that goes. I took up the MiniP, first battery, and I decided I would work on my backwards flight. I had been doing CCW circuits and loops backward yesterday and it was finally starting to click IRL. I went down to the end of the flight line because there really high weeds there and I figured that would up my chances of minimal damage if I did screw up. That may have been the only thing I did right. With out any warm up and without putting my finger next to the bailout switch ( the whole bail out thing is really new to me and it takes some mental preparation ) I proceed to do some more CCW backwards circuits and 2 loops. So far so good so given my day 2 cockiness I proceeded to swing out of a backwards loop into a backwards CW circuit. Things went bad really quick and it was evident she was going in. In that split second, I remembered the bail out and tried to hit the damn button. Of course I missed it, even though it is the bottom switch on the left side and it works just like the TH on the other side. And to add further insult to the whole thing, since I was futzing around searching for the bailout button, I never hit TH and went in under full power. It was literally on the ground before I said "Oh, better hit TH". Next comes the dreaded "walk of shame" as I tread in to the four foot high weeds looking for my heli. It literally took me about 10 minutes of tramping around to actually find it. Thats such an awful feeling that you just might not find it at all. So I fight with the weeds to get them to give it back and they were pretty sure that they wanted to keep their new toy but at that point there was no way and they eventually gave it up. I looked for the carnage and unbelievably the only thing I could really see wrong was weeds wound up in the tail and hanging off everything. I spend another 15 minutes de-weeding the mechanisms then I figured I may as well spin it up. It spun up slowly and it seemed to be struggling so I guessed the pinion was shot. Back at the table upon further inspection, I realized the main gear was spinning on the main shaft. I had sheared the Jesus bolt right off inside the main gear. I've good lots of bolts around so I was able to find two about the right length and I replaced the jesus bolts on the bottom and top, just in case. The last step is to tighten the bolt on the bottom of the main shaft and wouldn't you know it, I twisted it right off. Now I have to order new main shafts with the new bolt. Oh well, it could have been FAR worse. My legs are still itchy but I'm pretty sure I didn't bring any ticks home. Rick

Sorry about the bolt shearing, but isn´t it a nice feeling when you think you damaged the heli in a crash just to realize nothing (or almost nothing in your case) broke?
Had a similar mishap last week when I crashed the MiniP into a wheat field (with new A... 360 blades) and thought "well these didn´t last long". Pulled it out, removed the tangled mess and no damage to be found.

These zero cost crashs seem to lead to overconfidence/lack of focus on subsequent flights for me.
On a positive note: It´s already repaired and up in the air, had the parts in stock (blade holders, shafts, canopy holder, belt, pinion). Changed the head dampers (400 flights old) for good measure. Checked the motor bearings, they were gritty also. And noticed some cuts to the motor wires, new shrink wrap was in order. Now building up confidence again, flying like a grandma right now

Touch wood, I haven't crashed mine yet in the 12 months I've had it, but my Jesus bolt inside the main gear sheared off of its own accord the other week!! Luckily on spool-up, or it might have eneded badly.
How come you're practicing new stuff like backwards on your mini-P? The micros you have are perfect for all that.

I've been thinking of the BSD for my next larger / more expensive heli (whatever it may be - possibly a Goblin).
I have been wondering if I would actually have the bailout on the rhs (in place of TH) as that is my instinctive switch to flick, then have the TH on the left - having said that I guess it's safer to know how to instinctively kill the power to a heli. I suppose some sim training flicking the left switch might build up the muscle memory.. I always try new moves on my Trex 150 first, then on to the 300X and finally the Mini-P only when I'm confident. Yeah, funny the about the bolt, I just assumed I had a faulty one, only lasting about 11 months - but maybe it's under-sized

So not zero cost after all. The bearing above the pinion in the A frame was shot. Its all good though since I was looking for a reason to switch over to a 15T pinion anyhow.
It sounded like an intermittent high pitched rumbly squeal just in case anyone else has had a similar symptom. I had to rebalance my tail blades as well. Seems fine now for a simple spin up. I'll hopefully fly her this weekend. ' Rick

It's really a way too small bearing for the forces it gets and you have to replace it pretty often even if you don't crash. And even the smallest crashes are enough to make it go bad. Hopefully, Lynx has a new counterbearing support with a bigger bearing in it on the way.

I began to use bearings from my worn out pinions to replace the one in the Y support whenever the pinion is due. The pinion bearings do not wear out as fast.

Corrado explained that the Jesus bolt is supposed to be a sacrificial "fuse" when someone complained that it was breaking in crashes - it does sound as if yours broke a little too easily though
