That looks familiar. When that bearing let go on mine, I ended up replacing the tail shaft as well because the inner bearing race was galled to the shaft. The bearing must've got hot as my tail case was slightly melted around the bearing. Very slightly. Just enough that the bearing didn't sit in the cup snugly.

That's exactly what happened to me!! My 5x10x4 bearing is not sit snugly in my tail case anymore, there's slop there. But luckily I can insert a 5x11x4 bearing from my 450Pro main shaft block,it fit perfectly! Have 4 flights today, everything ok now!

Those bearings spin very fast and carry a lot of load, including shock loads. They should be lubed routinely to extend their service life. Mine have about 210 flights on them and I lube them every 10-15 packs.

I was going to make the same point. Oil your bearings!

Took the Protos out and messed with the ESC governor gains. Raised the gain too much and tossed the belt a half dozen times giving me some quick recovery and auto practice. Actually it was kind of fun other then having to reinstall the belt every other pack....After the sixth belt toss I dropped the gains down a level and all is good again....

Why would high gain result in belt coming off?

Too much gain causing a jolt in the drivetrain?

You were lucky 6x mtuccio. The loose belt could've jammed the main pulley against the frame... No auto possible.

Man I'm jealous... The weather has been terrible here for a couple weeks. I snuck in a few flights on Friday, but it wasn't on the Protos... Perhaps next Friday.

It's a combination of a few things happening at the same time:
  • Motor reacts and pulses the drivetrain given a very tight condition on the input but a loose condition on the output
  • Hard collective move is trying to slow the blades down and this goes against the motor trying to speed things up.
  • Frame flex. The front of the protos isn't the strongest around the motor area. I do not have the Y-brace installed because I'm running a 15T pinion right now.

I know I was lucky x6 times....I was just trying to see if I could come up with a belt tension that worked for this setting. The weather in NY hasn't been much better and we are actually supposed to be getting snow this afternoon....

LOL.. sorry for long post.. Guy's hope your birds are back up soon. Spring is cominggggg.. O and So far I am enjoying the dx7's I'm taking it apart to install a blue backlight so wish me luck..

I am currently in the midst of building my Protos 500 Carbon and one thing that has concerned me a great deal is the volume of loose metal shavings I have discovered in the parts bags. Some appear to me from milling, others metal appears to be from the bearing assembly process(ie..excess material left around the inner race). I have tried to be careful to lookout and remove any material that I find. Unfortunately, I have already had to purchase a second Main shaft collar, as I ended up striping it's threads when it was not tightening around the shaft. After close examination I found an aluminum shaving within the narrow split of the collar. This was preventing the ring from closing around the shaft.

Aha! I think you've solved a mystery that came up for me a week ago. When oiling the motor, I found a metal shaving about 4mm square, painted black on one side, gray metal on the other. It was magnetic and sticking to the windings. I couldn't believe it! The damage that could have (did?) to the motor was scary. I thought maybe it had been picked up at the field I've been flying at, but maybe it was there from the start. Sloppy! Anyone else find something like this?

Yup just started my build and also noticed some metal shavings and chips in some bags. I have been really meticulous with the build and now i will keep an eye out for stray metal chips. By the way this is my first build and the fit and finish is amazing.Got up to the flybar cage (I know) and going to do the grips and rest of the head this weekend, cant wait to get it in the air
