Guess I'll keep my Hurri 500 even though I have an X5
If you're reading this you know the story. I have about 3 complete 500 with gaui red and white 500mm carbon blades. All are plastic frames, don't have a cf frame. Currently fly X5 and love it. It's all the rc heli I will ever need but have these Hurricanes with so many spare parts. I know some like to have old motors rewound , but would think that wouldn't bring them back completely since the permanent magnets are weak...never did it, just my opinion. I convert X5 lites to FBL so have been using X5 FB heads. Not interested in converting hurris to FBL.
Looks like there still isn't any motors that will fit and work for 500 mid boom plastic frame. Is there a motor that would work if had a cf frame (since I wouldn't be restricted by OD of motor). I have x5 motors Scorpion 4020-910. I read where some have used this at the risk of stripping gears...not looking to push hurri beyond what it could do...just make use of them. Does anyone know where I can find a Gaui cf frame set complete (one that uses standard servos) ??? Was considering doing a mod to plastic frame to allow motor with a larger od not to increase power over the 2 20a-980 motors I have, just to fit a new motor. Maybe it's time to not bother with these 500s anymore, especially since my flying skills have advanced but sure seems like I could have fun using them logging invert hover practice and trying inverted ff. Now that I'm retired I sure have the time to try! Anyway, if I could find a used cf frame I would give it a try. |

You could use a 61T front gear and larger pinion gear. That would move the motor farther forward away from the bell cranks, which would let you install a larger diameter motor. You could also put a small spacer behind the bell cranks to move them out a little farther from the frame.
Not sure if you can still find a HeadHunter frame that PT mentioned, but if you can, they are great. I have a HeadHunter running a medium boom and 500mm blades and love it. I also have a NIB HeadHunter frame that I bought about 2 years ago and never took it out of the box yet.

Hey Jerry
That is what I did for a while on my Plastic Fantastic frames...Large pinion and 3mm thick spacers under the bellcrank arms for clearance...My headhunter now sports a Z20 980 and a X5 black boom! Need a 6s Batt and a new canopy and I'm complete!

Thanks all. Decided not to go with a cf frame...ordered a savox 4050 1200. A little pricey at $160.00. Especially for a discontinued motor that's been sitting on the shelf for a year or 2. About the same physical size as a z20a...should have as much power or more. Will start with 50t front and 13t pinion..work my way up if needed.
Tried using a 61 front gear and 20t pinion but couldn't fit scorpion 4020. Not enough room for pinion...too big for a plastic hurry anyway. motors with outside diameter bigger that a z20 (about 43mm) won't fit because not enough or any frame clearance, not bell crank. But the savox 4050 will fit nicely at 40mm od. Doubt it has enough torque to swing the 550 fiber glass blades I have (will try) but should be perfect for the Gaui 500mm cf blades. Hurricane Frank returning to Florida ! Will let you know how things work...with pics. |
