Looks very cool Tom, can't wait to see it working!
If you film it, and for added realism, will you run round the room with the penguin making aeroplane noises, should be enough to give us an idea

Damn it, Denis, you blew my surprise!
Damn pain in the ass, I tell you! Not making it out to my buddys farm today. This is taking longer than I thought, or as least hoped. Power on went good, sort of. I had to sort out an issue with the 5v side. All of this is time consuming as I dazy chained the wires. Radio shack everywhere around here is out of terminal strips. This I'll change out later. Also, forgot to run 12 volt power to one component, my fault. I knew about it, but wanted to see if it acted as a pass thru, it don't. Sure is looking good, though! I'm super-happy with the outcome so far. It makes all the gear I need to transport a hell of a lot easiert.

Damn fine work! It is always so much more rewarding building something from scratch and they always turn out best. I just love how you can put slight or subtle customizations suited best for you. Go yourself a cold one. You've earned it buddy.

Freaking set backs!
A couple issues popped up last night while I was trying to debug all this crap. First off, I couldn't get an input signal up to my screen! Found the wire broke off the video post so a simple solder job got that working. Next up, no diversity! Found my new receiver had a destroyed output connector. Right now I have signal from only one receiver. This pisses me off, the Chinese bastards. Still can't make a damn thing. So, I ordered a replacement receiver like my old one. Last up, my antenna tracker gave up the ghost! It was working but then just quit. Could be the load for the servos drew more amps than the system could deliver. I have 5 amps available, should have been enough as per their recommendations, but the possibility to 2 such large servo's over drew the controller. Now, I've ordered another tracker, made out a return ticket for this one, and ordered a CC 10A bec to replace the 5 amp with. I've gone over the wiring a half dozen times now and am convinced this is what happened. Immerison has a warning out about this and recommended 5 amps, but these suckers are large and eventually will have to carry some weight. Still, after I had the monitor up and working I have to admit, I really like the 12 inch monitor. What a HUGE difference! Can't wait to try it out. If all this crap wasn't enough, I was examining my Penguin. The damn little plastic horn clevis's I hated, never did change them. Sure enough, I found one cracked. So, what I did; I took a couple aluminum stand off's I had left over from all my wrecks so I drilled some holes and cut them down to size. Now, I like these suckers! Enough torque can be applied to the control rods to secure them permanently and the locktite ensures they will not come loose. In this pic you can see the crack I found in the plastic one on the rudder and the aluminum one I made to replace the plastic with. Unfortunately, ( or just my damn luck ), I broke the drill bit I have at home so I still have to make 2 more to replace the aileron ones with. She ain't gonna fly until this is done. So, while I await all these parts, the only thing I can still do is finish the set up on the Guardian stabilizer. Kind of afraid to touch it today, the way my luck is going! I mean, everything I have touched today has turned to shit!!! Just my luck, I got to pee, too!

Love your spacecraft tracking device, Tom
Can you notarize a document stating the transfer of all copyrights to this device to me, so I can start long and tedious process of patenting and marketing it to NASA (they will soon be subcontracting everything just like car makers do, as being a government organization they outgrew their ability to design anything worth trying, getting strangled by safety and other types of oversights)? I promise to mention your name in the footnote (like Bill Gates did when he bought MSDOS from his buddy, what was the buddies name? ), so you'll become (somewhat) famous while I'm getting rich. Natural order of things

Thanks, ( I think ). Nice knowing you're looking out after things.
Can't be any more tedious than this damn debugging, so you may want to wait until I do before you steal it. Unless you are going to do a true Bill Gates deal, that is. If you intend to do that then perhaps it would be best to go in together on this. I can work in so many bugs we could make a damn good living just in upgrading it all the time. Been in communication with rcmc. Seems like my tracker works, just not the display anymore. I expect to get a rma # from them next. I did order another one from another company. If rcmc will exchange this one I won't even bother with unboxing the other, just return it.

Son of a,,,,, it worked!
I have been fighting an issue seems like forever with this. I wasn't getting any telemetry to the tracker. I've been over the wiring on both the Penguin, the Hexa and the tracker at least 50 times trying to figure out what was going on. Can't have any line mikes in the system or data can't transfer. Ok, removed the mikes out of the camera's, still nothing. Ah ha! Both my vtx's have line mikes built into them, that's the issue. On the Penguin, cut away the heat shrink, heat up the posts for the mike and remove it. Next solder a wire onto the + of the removed mike port. Tada!!! It talks!!! Now to do the other and then figure out the programming. Also, need to balance out the diversity so it will switch antenna's when the cloverleaf antenna pushes out of range. This is going to be sooo cool!!!

Well, she's all ready now to commence flight testing!
Won't really know how it will react until I get something in the air and see how the diversity works, but each channel see's the data, and all the graphs look good. The risk of flight testing the tracker are really minimal even if I screwed something up. The cloverleaf antenna I use as my Omni I've been a mile out with and never dropped out, ( as long as I remember to make sure the damn thing was pointing straight down, ), so now all that remains to see is exactly when the directional 12db gain antenna kicks in. This is adjustable. I purposefully burnt out all my remaining 3s battery's today. Time to upgrade them. I've ordered all new 3s battery's from Gens Ace, including a 5000mah 3s for the tracker. I want plenty of mah's available for that puppy. So now, all I need is a spot of good weather when I'm off work and I'll finally see if this crap all works or if I come home with a pile of garbage!

So I take it the plan will be to do a bunch of nice close range tests, relatively speaking, knowing that you will maintain contact with the omni, and check that the tracking antenna's performance the whole time? Can you check logs to see which is being used for the duration of a flight?
Looking forward to the first tests. Cheers Sutty

Yep. There is quite a few tools to help you troubleshoot range issues. The entire flight, video and audio will be recorded with the dvr, so with the different tools it can easily see what is happening when, and even where.
Say 4 minutes out all of a sudden the Hexa does something weird but corrects itself. I can pinpoint that event and see if it was some sort of a glitch or view where on Google Earth it happened. See it there was a ridge that pushed up a column of air, say. I can even select individual channels, see where it switches.or diversity. More damn shit than I'll ever use. I can plug my phone into my case and use the audio stream to track the flight with Google Earth live on the monitor. This is really cool. Say I'm under those brand new super nice Zeiss goggles and something happens, ( just knocked on wood ). I can remove the goggles and just look at the screen and see where she went down, un-plug the phone and go right to it. So the plan is. Select Omni, fly out and observe my fpv signal strength. Hover in place and see what the tracker is getting. Keep stepping it out until the signal starts to go weak, hover and then select diversity. If the signal hasn't switched, ( easily identifiable with the leds ), adjust the pot until it does. Reverse procedure is it did switch. The osd provides fpv signal strength in a %. So the idea is to find that point and then back up about 1/4 that distance. Once the Hexa range is set, it should be good also for the Penguin, theoretically, as I'm using the same mw's between tx's, but we all know how that goes. Due to the range necessary these tests will be conducted over at Grant's place. I can follow the country roads so if anything goes wrong I can drive up to it. Once I do a few flights there to prove the system then I'll be able to do a little exploring. I still have one last item I need to buy to complete this project, a nice comfortable folding chair.
