Default Hobbywing 120+vbar gov

Started a thread on the Mikado section.

Thread HERE

I'm running a hobbywing 120hv with the vbar gov and it is freakin amazing!!! My temps were a little high so I mounted a small 12v fan on top of the heatsink and It dropped my temps down 20 degrees.

I thought some of you guys might be interested. I know many of you are former castle boys like I am and are looking for other options. I thought I might try this before going to a jive. So far its AWESOME!

SETUP

Scorpion 4035-560
11t pinion - kde adjustable mount + cnc gear
hobbywing 120 hv w/ fan mounted
PWM 12khz - 7.5 degrees timing (going to try 3.5 tomorrow)
Full size blueline V-bar w/gov - hyperion phase sensor
Zippy Flightmax 40c 5000mah
5:30 flight bangin hard 2200 headspeed

TEMPS

Yesterday ambient (85 degrees in the evening)
Motor - 158 internal / 142 external (7.5 timing)
Esc - 109 immediatly following flight

Today ambient (95 degrees. It was freakin hot today!)
motor - 170 internal / 156 external (7.5 timing will drop timing back to 3.5 degrees tomorrow)
Esc - 120 immediatly following flight

let me know what you guys think.

+1. Running a HW120 with vBar gov. I just recently switched to the 530kV 700mx motor and got much better results. The additional overhead with the higher kV made all the difference. With the 510kV it could still be bogged. But now it holds head speed incredibly well. Very happy with the motor switch!

Snap you need to try a Xera 4035, worth the trouble finding one .

Baah! ;-). Just when I get really happy with my setup I start thinking about more.

Seriously though, it's really good now. Really enjoying it on a new level.

Default HW with 700MX

Onthesnap: Can you share a bit of your settings?

I am running the HW 120A HV and Align 700MX (530kV) kombo on a fairly new bird and I am still experimenting.

HW 120A HV: 12kHz, 7.5degree, very soft startup.

Vbar governor: Gain 30, max rpm 2250, hyperion phase sensor

I have mounted the ESC in the back and it is not even warm to the touch after a flight, the motor on the other hand is somewhat warm but I guess that totally unavoidable with the kind of power that has to run through it.

I have just popped the gain up to 40 but not yet flown it...

I ordered mine directly from hobbywing. They had a sale 10% off so it negated the $15 shipping.

How long did it take for you to get it? Is it shipped from China?

I think it took 6 days maybe. I remember thinking it was much faster than things I've ordered from hobbycity. Yes, I believe it is shipped out of china.

I left the timing at default. I've heard of a few HW120 ESC failures when experimenting with lower timing settings, so I've just left mine alone.

Also using very soft start-up. With this, auto bail out is just barely usable.

My gain ended up at around 27. I kept lowering it until the oscillations on the motor were not perceptible.

I've heard of failures when people mess with higher timing. Lower timing is fine I believe.
Now, I have heard of failures when people mess with the PWM and drop it to 8.

Tried gain 40 yesterday and immediately got some "bird sound" and motion in the tail. I will have to live with gain 30 I think.

The motor is rather hot with 12kHz/7.5degree but the ESC does not get warm at all. I am thinking of trying 3.75degree but I am rather satisfied with how it works right now...

Are these the exact same esc as the Turnigy K-Force 120A-HV?

Yes, except for the label on the ESC
