Default "Tick" in drivetrain?

Just spinning my Protos over by hand and I can hear a mild ticking noise somewhere near the boom block, also, the belt appears to be not running centrally on the tail pulley, any suggestions?

Tick typically gear tooth. Sloppy belt? maybe not tight enough ?

Nick up the boom block bolts.
Put some oil on the pulley bearings.
Pulley belt pulleys out, check bearings(if bothered).

Cheers guys, I'll give those things a try.
One thing I never really figured out on the Protos was how tight do I want my belt?

I run mine reasonably tight, I've had a few belts come off, so I keep them a bit tighter now and so far haven't had a problem.
Mini Protos can be run a lot looser in comparison, never had one of them come off

I had same problem with mine and my belt was not tracking properly.
Found sloppy bearings in idler pulley. Usually a tic on Protos is a bearing going bad since there is no gear mesh. Either tail pulley or tail support box idlers.

Cool

I thought that sound is normal when turned by hand. it is the belt meshing on the main gear.
change your belt if it bothers you

as far as tension is concerned too tight is much worse than loose

it should be only tight enough to stop the belt from slipping, start with the motor then the tail

also make sure you dont have any extra twists on the belt. it should only rotate 90* inside the boom.

The harder (lots of cyclic in maneuvers) you fly, the tighter the belt needs to be. Otherwise you will get belt skipping and lots of belt dust. I used to follow the 2-3mm gap recommendation by MSH. But as my flying progressed, I could hear the belt skip during some moves. So I tightened it some more (probably 1mm gap) and no more belt skipping.

Check your OWB inside the pinion too. That one also gets loud when it's about to fail.

Make sure you don’t have an extra twist in the belt inside the boom. Also, when you tighten the belt you have to pull tension in two directions with motor and the boom. For example, if you have too much tension on the boom side and not enough on the motor side then the belt teeth won’t line up correctly on the main gear.
