Default Hot Compass SZ 4926 motor?

Just finnishing the build of the 7HV. Everything went smooth as butter :-)
Motor is the Compass SZ 4926, and the esc is the Hobbywing 120hv pro.
When i spin up the motor mounted on the heli, on the bench, without the main blades, but with the tail blades, it runs pretty hot after a short period of time, in about a minute it is 42C (107-108F) Is this normal?
If not, could this heat be caused by wrong settings in the hobbywing ESC? Like hz or timing settings.
What else could cause this?

And btw, what settings are you guys using on this esc with this motor?

Thanx in advance :-)

That's not all that hot to be honest ... most of my motors come down between 100-130F

If your ESC and packs come down warm (not hot) then all should be well. If you want it to run cooler, you can adjust your PWM and timing.

by memory using the HW120 - 12pwm & 18.75 timing - i used these settings with NO issues.

I am running same settings as ray man also. Mine also gets very hot like that after being on for 30 seconds on the bench. After an entire flight mine hits 160 on the windings.

If you can touch the motor and hold your hand on it for at least a couple seconds - you'r fine. It means you'r under 75C. If temps are above that, I'd check for any bad bearings or gear mesh, although high-end motors with such winding as SZ4926 are safely rated for well above 110C, although such temp is already bad for main gear. peace

Its typical for a motor to heat up fairly quickly if you run it on the bench without a load. But 42C is not even close to being hot though. Fly it and measure the temp then. I'd be concerned only if it got over a 100C for example. All the motor components including epoxy used are designed to take at least 150C temps and in many cases even more but the problem is once the magnets get hot enough they lose their magnetic strength which results in decreased power output. So if you get temps between 60C and 80C after flight its normal.

Wow that heat sink makes one heck of a difference!! Did you cut any vents into your canopy also?

Default Hot Compass SZ 4926 motor?

Was testing this great bird couple of weeks ago with a flat 70% trottle curve. Motor abot 87-90C after flying one pack. Thats TOO HOT!
So what I did was to increase the trottlecurve up to flat 90 curve, after recommandations from a couple of great guys at our local club.
Result: motor temp about 70C, which is ok, but still a little hot.
Cut a couple of holes in te canopy, to get a little cooling for the motor.
Tested it today, and temperature is great, 55C.
Here is a pic of how I did the holes:

Thought this could be a little helper for someone else who mabye is strugling with the same motor temp "problem"

Ordered the same heatsink from Gmauro. I think I have lost track of all the goodies in the mail...
