maybe someone could sponser bob to do a servo test on the same heli. get a bunch of different servos and try them out on the same heli. maybe the same for gyro's, and blades too. i am personally thankful for ANY info, good or bad that i get on this site from a pro builder like bob.

Hi guys,

When I bought my Compass Sport kit I wanted to prove that a helicopter could be set up for an entry level pilot on and entry level budget and still fly great. I wanted to tempt some plank pilots into taking the plunge with the ability to reuse as much of their plank equipment as possible. I used a DX7, 531 JR servos, YS 50, MP5, nicad battery, AR7000, and fiberglass blades. Overall it was a very nice project. I used this to teach a few guys how to fly.

As they progressed into fast forward flight I noticed the heli would become uncontrollable at times when coming out of a tight fast turn, exiting a fast loop, etc. I almost crashed several times because the heli simply didn't do what I told it to do.

I spent a week going over every possible cause/solution that myself and a couple other pilots could think of. A few things made slight improvements, but nothing close to a solution.

Finally, I broke down and installed some Futaba 9252 digital servos right there at the field. I was therefore able to perform back to back flights with the JR premium sport non digital servos and the midrange Futaba digital servos.

I can tell you all without any reservation whatsoever that the digital servos made ALL the difference in the world. The heli tracked like it was on rails. I could fly as fast as 12.5 degrees of pitch and 30% nitro would haul the mail. Loops tracked straight and pulled out when "I" wanted them to. The heli hovered rock solid, too. In every aspect, changing three servos simply turned this helicopter into a whole new machine!

Now, can you fly with nondigital servos? Yep. Can you enjoy sport flying and forward flight? Yes, sir! Can you perform loops and rolls? Sure, why not? Are the loops and rolls predictable and controllably repeatable? I wouldn't go that far.

We have to be fair and respectful for all levels and finances of the heli population. Some want to fly on a budget. Some simply don't need to spend the extra cash. However, those that desire to strain a ccpm heli will definately enjoy the benefits of quality servos.

Finless, Please give the heli a fair shake keeping the low end servos in mind. Seperating the performance of the heli from the performance of the servos will be a challenge.

I think the heli will fly fine with the cheapo servos. I flew hs55s in my T-Rex 450 V2 for month or two before I bought some HS-65s and at my skill I could tell no difference at all.
The only reason I bought the HS-65's was one of the HS-55 burnt out. So durability is just as important as performance.

lets clear up a few things that people often confuse.

if you have 2 servos, one analogue, one digital which have the same amount of toruque then you wont see this not wanting to pull out of loops thing that Tyler is talking about. what you will notice is that the model will track straighter and follow your stick movements more accurately.

however. there is something else going on here too. all the mid range digital servos are coreless motors, this means the motor is lighter so it can change direction quicker making the servo more accurate too.

however you can get budget digitals like the 3152, it has as much torque as a 9252 but its got a normal motor so not quite as accurate but less than half the price. I have been recomending these to noobs for a couple of years and they definitly last the course. The main thing that lets them down is they arent that fast so when you start trying to do tic tocs it requires a slightly different technique to faster servos.

Although I agree with Ade, I believe the most important factor is ball bearing support differences in the servos. Cheap servos are bushing supported. Some servos are bearing supported, but not on both ends. I believe a double ball bearing servo is essential for eccpm.

My helicopter would sling-shot out of a turn/loop because of holding power which is way up on digitals was NOT present on cheap analog servos. Digitals develop near full torque right off of center while analog servos generate full torque far into their travel path. Two servos may have the same final torque power, but they may not be as useful at center. CCPM helis spend a lot of time near center, and holding power is essential.

I could wriggle the servos horns a lot with the cheap servos. The entire output shaft and everything was not supported well at all. I would say 2mm of travel each direction was easily possible with some load. That would be 4mm of travel from center as a total. NOT GOOD. Double bearing supported servos were much more solid.
