severe tail shake NOT wag
Hey folks,
i bought a used warp. It flies quite nice, but from time to time i get a severe tail shake, not like a normal tail wag. Its getting so severe i was afraid the warp would disintegrate. But its only from time to time. Any ideas? |

Does it have the metal tail gear box...the one with the metal side plates? When I first bought my 360 it had the carbon fiber tail box side plates and from time to time it would vibrate badly, something to do with rigidity and an alignment issue with the carbon fiber, as soon as I upgraded to the new one with metal side plates it was smooth as silk. The part # is 10-8006 and can be had from Pro star hobbies. Hoping that helps you.

I would check the tail bearings and tail linkage, if the ball link is nice and stiff on the servo arm.

My warp and goblin both do that when I have the gyro gain turned up too high. It can be very violent.

it seems to be fixed, seems as it was only a tail gain issue

Maybe it is from the ESC. Try to play with the P gain.

Keep the tail bearings lubricated as well as the tail slider.
Make sure the belt it just tight enough so that you can't skip a tooth if you hold the tail in one hand and gently try to turn the head with the other. Most people run tail belts way too tight. Make sure that one of the tail grip bearings are not axially frozen to the hub and that the previous owner has not bent the hub (pretty hard to do, but I have seen a bent one). The tail on the Warp is extremely good. Properly set up and lubricated, it will work well and last a very long time.

I just received a used Warp yesterday and flew it for the first time today. It has a bad fast wag hovering that gets worse with more RPM. Tail gain doesn't have much effect on it. I have only flown it for 5 minuets so I haven't spent much time diagnosing it.
The tail slider is very stiff. With the linkage disconnected you feel it stick before it moves. With the servo controlling it on the bench it drags enough that the tail doesn't center same each time you move the stick. I wanted to fly it once before I did any work on it just so I know if there is a problem I didn't cause it. I have zero experience with the Warp. I'm pretty sure the slider isn't right. How free should it be? |

It should move very, very freely. Both of mine do, as did the one I just worked on foe Sing23. Take it apart and reassemble it a piece at a time. You will find the problem.

The slider was fine. The ball links on the tail grips were SUPER TIGHT. I resized the links, went from 12mm to 7mm on the servo horn and set the tail gain to 30 in the DX9. I don't know what the value is in the Ikon at the moment. Hovering under a street light the tail was rock solid.
The links on the swash feel pretty tight too. I'll spend some time going through the helicopter this weekend and get it dialed in. Any good reads available for the Warp? |

I'm not sure this is much of anything to read. Set it up well both mechanically and electronically and it just goes and goes.
I do basically no maintenance and it just keeps on going. I think I've replaced tail bearings once and links as they get sloppy. As of now, my Warp sits at 1207 flights. Oh yea, I also had bearings go out on the motor. If I was a bit more like Ah Chem and kept on the maintenance a little more, I probably wouldn't have even had to replace what I did. |

The links do come tight and need to be sized correctly. This is common knowledge if you read the build threads, but may not have happened on your machine. I do know I broke my cheap sizer using it to remove material, but my new reamer took care of that issue.
I've also had wobbles from the mainshaft bearings out of alignment (don't ask), belt too tight, gyro gain, and sticky tail blades in the grips. Runs amazing though. |
