Default Advice for Gear Meshing

Do I have what you'd consider "too much" play in my gear mesh?

I just rebuilt my 450, and this is the part I'm still unsure of...

Yes, definitely a little too much. Take a strip of copy paper and fold it in half, lengthwise... should be no more than 1cm wide at this point (length doesn't matter so much, a few inches is fine). Run that strip between the pinion and main gear when you set mesh, tighten the bolts and remove the paper by spinning the motor manually.

At this point, cycle the gear around by hand and make sure the mesh doesn't get too tight at any point. If it does, mark that spot and re-set the mesh at the marked location.

Hmm, oddly enough, that's what I did. Perhaps change the main gear?

No don’t do that... if that is what you did then you either had a piece of paper which was too thick, or, you did not push the motor hard enough.

I just used a store receipt. I've tried again, but it looks the same to me. Looks just like this:

oh buddy, what works for me is not paper, but tissue paper, just those simple cheap tissue paper, not the scotties fat thick super absorbing ones, the cheap thin ones.

Losen your motor screws/mount, feed the tissue paper in the mesh and turn the gear to make the gears eat into it. Then with your free hand push the motor towards the main gear. Tighten one screw on the motor so it is not free to move. Then check your mesh if you want, it should be okay. I just tighten all the bolts because once the tissue paper is gone, it will be smooth, Having the tissue paper eat into the gears may seem tight, but once its out, its going to have a proper mesh.

So I redid my gear meshing, paying closer attention to the motor position as I tightened the bolts after noticing that there was movement as I did this before. This is how it is now:
