Tight tolerances gone bad
I bought my CF Protos kit back in Dec 2011. I just recently finished collecting all the bits and pieces required to finish her out, so I'm working on the build now. For the most part, quite enjoyable; It's cool to build something that requires a bit more craftsmanship, but
So far, I've had to stop work twice due to two different bearings that are unusable due to not fitting their shafts; a TR shaft bearing and a thrusted TR radial bearing. It is the bearings, not the shafts. Damn thrusted TR bearing isn't available from MSH except if you buy the whole thrusted TR kit. Thank God for Boca Bearings. I also found the split tail pitch slider link that was going around back then. This thing better fly good....

Wow, that's patience, sitting on a Protos kit for more than 1 year . As for tolerances, how can you tell it's the bearings and not the shafts? Had I been in your position, I'd have probably just polished the shafts a bit to get them to fit.

I kinda got distracted over the past year or so, but I'm back
I checked the TR shaft and bearing by just flipping the shaft around to see if it would fit the known good bearing, and then tried the other (known good) end of shaft to see if it would fit the bearing in question - shaft checked out good; the bearing failed the test. Similar test for the tail grip radial bearing on the thrusted hub - it was clear the shafts are correct, but the bearings inner races were either too small or out of round. I considered trying polishing the shafts, but I figured, ehhh, I've waited a year...what's another 1/2 week wait for new bearings. It's all good

There is a guy on RR with the same issue on the main blade holders. On side is tight ? Seems to be poor quality bearings.

Boca Bearings
http://www.bocabearings.com/productd...tSubGroupID=30 May also need the thrusted tail bearing. http://elektrorc.com/index.php?cPath=62_72_64_75

Bearings
Thanks for catching me on RR. I have the same problem with the main blade grips and spindle. Have tried a dozen bearings so far thanks to ordering new grips and helidirect sending me out a replacement spindle and bearings. But still am not able to get one good set in two grips so when all tightened down on main hub they move freely. Once the bolts are tight grips won't move freely. So I ordered replacement boca bearings and will see if that fixes it. If not I am not sure what my next step will be. Have to say I am not too happy at this point. Very frustrating. First heli I have ever build that I have had this many issues. Sure hope this fixes it and it flies like everyone says.

if you pull out on the grips, do they become free'er?
how tight are we talking here? would they free up after a couple flights?

Assuming the head is assembled correctly, and you've got all the proper shims between the bearings, the grips rarely move freely without load, because the dampers are preloaded. To test bearing smoothness, you should insert 2 hex wrenches into the blade bolt hole and pulling outwards on them with both hands, as hard as you can, then rotate the grips and they should feel smooth.

Tightness
I have not tried pulling out on them with hex wrenches. I can give that a try and see what happens. As for how tight. They move and would move with the servo but are just not completely free. I have never had a heli that was tight on building and or pulling out on the grips. Thanks for the help. Will see if that works. Will put in the boca bearings I already ordered and see.
