Default Capi's 90 Tail Mod.

Hey folks,

I've had my 90 for awhile now but due to real life and a Canadian winter I haven't actually flown it yet ! It has sat on the bench and made puppy eyes at me. I have since had the chance to replace all the original defective parts and get it tuned up as best as I can for its first flight (1-2 months from now). But one thing I have never been happy with is the tail pitch slider. I just couldn't get it supersmooth without leaving some of the screws alittle looser than I would like. This week I was determined to get it right. So I decided to implement a similar mod that I do on both my 550 and 50. Here are 2 photos that show what I did.

So what I did was drill out and tap the bellcrank to use an M3 instead of the pair of M2.5. This required a bit of careful drilling and tapping (that's what she said). It also required me to install new bearings. I also added a 2nd set of bearings, I happen to have a ton of these bearings in my bearing tray so they must be used alot on the 550 or 50. After doing this little mod I was able to basically crank down on all the bolts without having any resistance in the pitch slider mechanism. The pitch slider is SUPER smooth now, I can basically move the pitch slider around by blowing on the tail blades !

The manual on Outrage RC shows M2.5x6 on page 15.

You are looking at the 550 or 50 manual.

Dominic,

What were the dimensions of the bearings you used - specifically their width?

I noticed that the 2 extra 'outer' bearings stick out a little although it should not affect their operation.

Aslo - did you require any small 0.5mm thickness bearing clearance type washers to prevent the bearings from being compressed against each other?

Currently building up a new Velocity 90 myself, but I'm not near the tail stage build at this point in time.

Thanks

Costas

I'll have to get back to you on the dimensions of the bearing, I cannot remember where my huge Plano parts box is at the moment

The two outter bearings do stick out alittle but the inner races should ride on eachother so it shouldn't matter.

No, I didn't use any shims, the arm the M3 goes through is threaded so it is held in place even with the small gap.

Make sure to take a look at my build thread for more tips.

P.S. Last night I went over to my buddies house to check on his brand new Velocity 90 and the kit was VERY different from mine. Almost all of the updated parts were on it and the tail was super smooth without the tail mod. The newer kits look alot better than my early production kit.

My kit is also a fairly recent one so most of the issues that I have read on the forums seem to have been addressed.

The only thing that I have picked up as an issue in my kit has been the main and tail blade bolts not being your typical full shanked items - Easy enough for me to rectify.

I'll take a closer look at my tail when I get to that stage of the build. I'll keep your modification in mind, just in case..

Thanks
