Controlled Storage Discharge of full LiPo batteries
I was wondering what folks are using to discharge their fully charged LiPo's that they have not used at the field -- i.e. bad weather, only flew a couple packs, etc.
I have an iCharger 306B which I think can discharge 50W or 80W, I forget, which isn't much at all. I increased the max discharge rate to 5A, but obviously, this is limited by the resistive element's power rating through which I am discharge storing my packs. I also have a PowerLabs Dual 8x2 that's part of a charging combo I got from Progressive, but I think that one can discharge up to 95W. I don't have deep discharge batteries to regeneratively recharge, so what do people recommend to use for controlled discharge of LiPo packs that's quicker than the limited discharge capability in their chargers?

I use my powerlab. Takes about an hour for a 6S5000, or more for a 12S stick. Still gets the job done. Between your three charging banks, I'd imagine you could parallel discharge or setup all the channels for the infrequent times you need to storage charge.
Otherwise, most folks use a regenerative setup, I think. |

I use my iCharger Duo's function that lets me discharge from LiPos on one channel, into an external resistive load connected to the other channel. My load will currently let me do 500W (20A on 6S), without heating up the charger. I can tweak it to let me hit the 650W max for the charger.
But a few of these might help you out: https://www.helifreak.com/showthread.php?t=656506 External dischargers, $16 each, they'll do 100W on 6S, and they stop at the target voltage you set.

I used to use 2 12v car headlamps in series (pretty fast) but now use regenerative discharge back into my deep cycles.. yet another advantage of using deep cycles to field charge. All the iChargers and FMA chargers can do this. I can go up to 40A discharge.. finishes in no time and nothing gets warm.

I built this. It is set and forget because it will shut off automatically at a preset voltage. There is a parts list toward the bottom of the thread if you are interested.

Thanks all for the replies. I think I like the solid state discharge approached that is based on several of those LM317T's voltage regs. I was looking at the schematic for it (or was it the wikipedia entry), and by tying Vout to Adj together, you are turning it in a constant current source? Where is the resistor at the Vout tied with Adj?
I too have the Cellog 8M (the non logging one for $18, not $35). I remember it provided some sort of alarm voltage setting and an output port. Looking at the manual (page 9), there is a wiring diagram for relay control -- you must have used that one.

There is no resistor required on the V out/adjust legs since they get shorter together for max voltage. The schematic is provided in the link posted. If you have any specific questions about the discharger pm me.

I put two 12v automotive cooling fan motors in series and of course removed the blades lol
Together they pull about 10A so a fully charged 6s 5000 mah takes +- 20 min. I don't like using my charger as it creates to much heat/wear and tear on the charger. Easy pleasy
