Power vault cooling fan speed adjustment
So I recently bought the 1300 watt power supply and it's really nice, it's the one with the red metal case, not the one in the hardshell case though I think they are the same.
Anyway, the fans on these only have one speed, full blast and since I don't really want to put it in my back room with the door closed while charging in case something happened, I need to see what it takes to slow these puppies down. I'm not pulling much load from it now with just a Cellpro 10 on the 12v output so heat isn't an issue though I'll be getting a PL6/8 sooner than later. Anyone know what some simple solutions would be?

The fan speed is not user adjustable.

Thanks Gregor.
So no dip switches, pots, or anything under the hood? Completely hard wired? It's disappointing for sure. I'll look up the specific model number of those server PS when i get home, hopefully there is more info on them. Pretty sure they are Dell made.

I haven't opened it. But I do suspect that while it may be possible, its not likely something that Revolectrix would call "user adjustable".

Yeah, I bought this one cause it was from them, warrantied by them, etc, and uses brand new supplies connected together properly. I guess i'd rather keep those benefits now since I paid for them and keep the lid closed.

That is essentially the sum of the advantages to buying this power supply versus other modded server supplies. The supplies used internally are brand new (not recovered from a server farm) and the whole setup is warrantied. There are more desirable supplies in the wild for this purpose, IMO, but Revolectrix was able to acquire these direct from the manufacturer which made them usable in a retail product. Unfortunately, as you discovered, there are a few trade-offs. Size is one, noise is another. But for those looking for piece of mind in a ready to use, high wattage power supply, it's a good option.

So did anyone work out how to tweak the fan speeds? My Mrs. is going to (just received mine) kill me with this puppy howling before I go to the field?

best I come up with so far is putting it in the laundry room and closing the door Can still here it and the beeps so I know when it's done. Otherwise I haven't looked beyond that to tone it down.

I do the same. Keeps it "quiet" while still allowing notification of status as it nears completion. I also use the CCS software to monitor without having to open the door. Would be good if someone does the quiet mod

After a fair amount of research on workarounds where others had had success, I was able to add a simple jumper (found on the back of any old hard drive) across two pins on the back of each Dell Power Supply's. The fans now run on very low setting (probably 10% of what they were) when the charger is at idle and crank up to what seems suitable (sound like 100% sometimes) when any load is raised by the charger...I am now a very happy camper with my setup..

Note: This mod is not recommended if you want to keep your warranty, and I don't claim any real knowledge when it comes to electronics, just going by a recommendation of others on another forum (will try and find the thread)?
The jumpers that I have bridged, are, second from the left on the bottom row, jumpered to the pin directly above on each of the PSU's. That is it... Ps any jumper found on the back of a pc hard drive will suffice. I am prepared to void the warranty just to be able to use my charge setup without all the unnecessary noise. That's an awesome find burbler!! I probably won't mess with it myself as I'm the only one to hear it and for fun flies it doesn't matter so much outside with my genny but for others this could save relationships! lol

FYI I think it is load based, as immediately when the amps ramp up, the fans ramp up also (they would not get a chance to warm up IMO), as the amps ramp down at the end of the charge the fans ramp down also.
Like I said above I am prepared to void the warranty and if the PSU's fail (I doubt they will because of this mod), I will replace with one that does not sound like a FA-18 spooling up in my living room even when the charger does not have a load. Last edited by burbler; 03-23-2015 at 04:43 AM.. |

This is one downside of load-based fan speed. The fans slow down when the load does, but the unit is still cooking inside because it hasn't cooled yet. Not likely a safety issue, but may reduce the lifespan of the supplies. On the plus side, cranking the fan up immediately on introducing a load will help keep the temps down in the first place. So there's a trade-off.

My charge case draws air through the PSU's in combination and with assistance of the fans in the PL8, so I doubt actual high temps will be an issue. I will post up a couple of pics of my case when complete. I might even put a digi temp in the Powervault and monitor a few cycles just for peace of mind.
