Lepton Power system questions
Hi guys,
I've had my Lepton for 2 years now but only in the past 3-4 months I have been flying it regularly and doing some good sport flying and a little 3D style maneuvers. So it is the first time I have been pushing the heli. My setup is Hirobo BEC and motor and I fly with 4S3700mAh and 24 pinion, stock tail length with 64mm hirobo blades and SAB main blades. The heli bogs constantly when I try to do tic-tocs so much that I ve given up. In addition when I just sport fly without pushing the heli the Pack/BEC/Motor temps after about 7:30 mins are about 38/60/60 C. If I fly harder (idle2) then the temps are 40/60/70+ C after 6 mins. So it seems that the motor is getting hot. Is this reasonable? Could the motor be giving up after just maybe 100 hours? Or is it just not upto the job power-wise? Also I had to cut an opening on my canopy to get some air to the BEC otherwise it overheats (~80C) and start cutting off after 3-4 mins even when I just sport fly. I am thinking I need a new motor...but I am not sure how to interpret the data I have... I would greatly appreciate any feedback as to which way to go. Thanks |

Is your battery 2 years old???
I would be more inclined to think that a new battery would solve the problem Have you data logged the heli? How much charge do you put back into the pack after a flight? What headspeed are you running and are you doing the tic tocs in idle 2?

7.5 minutes is a long time, I'm lucky to get 4 min out of my 4s setup. You can get a lot more powerful packs now that you could get 2 years ago, I'm pretty sure it wont bogg with some new 4s 45c packs.

I have a fresh set of 4S 3700 35C/60C.
I have just bought a data logger to get some flight info so I will have a better picture. Usually the packs get about 3300 back for the flights I described. I have completely reconfigured the head and the curves on my heli since my post here so the picture changed a lot... Smooth flying on normal never got me to notice that my Idle2 pitch was +-12.5 and cyclic about 7.5. This also led to the stab rod hiting the blade grips at max ail-elev when centre pitch! I changed head setup and swash mixing and ended up with +-11 on collective and about 6-6.5 on cyclic using inner holes on the blade grips. My roll rate is OK but my yaw rate is slow.... The heli does not really bog but it does not feel powerful. I am struggling with the throttle curve... Too high and it feels that I am overspinning the head and the heli seems "heavy"-"sluggish" on cyclic (!!!???) or a little lower and I do not have the power that I would like. I think I need the logger data... |

80% of 3700 is ~3000 btw. You are over-discharging your batteries and will shorten their life.

I think maybe your head speed could be a bit slow, get it up to about 2800 or so and see how it feels. Try 90% or even 100% flat throttle curve in idle up and keep trying to get all your settings as good as you can get them. Never discharge over 80%, maybe treat yourself to some new packs, I would if I could afford it, I'm always dreaming of having new packs to fly with.
