Default 4mm blade bolts, can I drill out my bladegrips?

I've read somewhere about bladegrips being drilled out to 5mm, has anyone on the freak done this? I use 4mm headbolts now but for safety I would like to be able to use 5mm bladebolts.

OK I talked to a friend who has a drill press (I don't have one) and he said it'll be either hit or miss. I guess since there are only problems with bladebolts bending instead of breaking I'll just wait for the next upgrade opportunity. The Stratus flybar carrier and open tailgearbox seem to be nice upgrades so I have to do some saving up unless the bolts bend earlier then that.

No problem drilling them out. Go in a few drill sizes and you wont need a drill press.

Default Why?

Why do you have to drill them out? I've been flying a Minair machine for over 10 years with the same blade bolts. They don't bend. Are you talking the plastic blade grips? As if you are talking the metal ones Minair has different silver inserts you can pop into the metal blade grips to go to 5mm bolts. My Spectra came with 5mm, my 1005 runs on 4mm.

I've read mixed experiences with this. I'm kind of new the MA but if you say you don't have problems with almost 1800 flights on just one ship it should be good. What headspeed are you running? I think I'll go 1800-1950 or something like that.

Default Head Speed

I run 1560 in normal mode, 1680 in idle up 1, and 1800 in idle up 2 on this machine.

Raja,
Yes the 4 mm blade bolts will bend using the plastic grips at the headspeeds that are being used today. That is why Tim starting offering the 5 mm blade bolt grips.
I was bending 4 mm blade bolts when I was using the plastic grips in FAI contests, I drilled out the grips and blades to accept 5mm blade bolts. 4mm bolts and the metal blade grips are not a problem.

That means I still have to try to drill them out?

Wink Then the answer is

You must be talking 2000 rpms David or close to it. I was in FL and saw the top FAI guys there and they fly at 2000 rpms during their high speed routine. I have the Extreme head (metal head block with plastic blade grips) on my 1005 and I run it at 1800 rpms without bending the 4mm bolts. I'm using 710mm SAB blades at 185 grams also as an FYI.

I don't fly THAT hard and I can see the crazy flying that some people do like Alan Szebo can probably bend the bolts. Those guys play hard on the machines, turn up some insane rpms, and have no regard it seems to the wellbeing of the machine.

Tim has to accomodate all flying modes hence why it makes sense to go to 5mm bolts. It never fails though, the stronger they make them, the harder they fly them, to the point of breakage, and then they go, oh, that's too hard, back off a bit!

I think I'll try and see what happens. I don't think I'm that hard on a machine.

Default Sounds like a good plan

That's probably the best idea. Try it, if they bend then you need new ones get 5mm and drill the grips out. If they don't bend then why fiddle with something that isn't broke and buy new bolts when you don't need them.

The grips on my Fury Extreme were 4mm too. I was going to drill them like David suggested, but I just picked up a new set of grips instead. My grips had an obvious gouge from a crash so I wanted to replace them in case there was any hidden damage. The replacements weren't bad for MinAir parts, only 40 bucks for the set.

Since I boomstriked the h*ll out of my Raptor its time to get the Fury ready to fly again. I finally had the courage to drill them and, and it worked out just fine!

Drilling them out is no problem and the 4mm will bend and I was only turning 1750-1800 I am using all 5mm now.
