Default Cheap cyclic servos

Ok guys, my build was almost completed and I got laid off. I had some ds821 cyclics, but had to sell them off. Now I want to get it all back together, but I simply can not afford $80-$100 for servos right now.

This is my first CP heli, so I will only be doing hover training and hopefully mild sport flying in the near future. I know there are a lot of threads with servo suggestion here and in the 550 forum, but I'm looking for a cheaper alternative. At the same time, I don't want to be fighting cheap components while learning.

Taking all of that into account, is there any way to spend less than $40 on cyclic servos and have decent results? I see lots of servos that seem to have enough torque, but are a little slow, for $8-$12 each. I usually subscribe to the "buy right, buy once" mentality, but I'm ready to spool this baby up and get it into the air.

Any links or recommendations are much appreciated.

Ahh, the age old question... price or quality? .. You're either going to pay in cash or by fighting cheap components. Either way you are going to pay. IMHO you arent going to find anything new in that price range that you will be happy with. As soon as a super cheap servo downs your heli, you are right back above the price of better servos in repair costs. Maybe look in the for sale section here on HF, lots of guys may be selling a decent set for a good price. Align DS610's or even DS 510's are popular to sell off cheap when upgrading to top-shelf servos.. and i've seen both used in the 425 successfully.

Good Luck!!

I'm about to get these http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...idProduct=9391

I don't know how they will perform but I'm quite hopeful they will be relatively decent.

I'm only using these in a plastic fantastic which I'm building as my "new stunts" heli so it's gonna crash eventually....well, sooner probably.

I'm happy to report back once I've used them for a bit if someone reminds me....

Cheers

Nick

Thanks guys. I follow the classifieds here religiously.

I have a good idea what speed I need, but not sure how much torque is sufficient. I have been considering servos with 55-70 oz.in. is that about right?

Are metal gears really needed or are plastic or karbonite gears sufficient?

The KDS metal geared servos aren't bad. Not the fastest but they do the job. I'm running the cheapest plastic versions at about $4 each at the moment and they have never actually failed me. They will strip if you crash hard enough, but at $12 for a whole set I can buy 10 for the price of one nice one. I wouldn't want to use them for 3D flights but if all you want to do is hover and a bit of forward flight they do the job rather well. Way better than I expected - Been running 100% flat throttle curve to beat the wind and they still stand up to the stress. Impressive for the price.

Thanks for the help guys. The Futaba s3004 is exactly what I have been looking for. I managed to get 4 servos (one as a spare) and the large wheels for under my $40 budget, and Futaba is a name I am familiar with from my fixed-wing days.

I have the Savox SC-0254 on my X5 which is a bigger heli. Heaps of flights, no problems. A pretty solid digital MG servo for the price.

On my EP425 I've had Align DS510s for ages too.
